The Kandertal is different again – back in civilisation after Kiental, the valley is a deep trench like that of Lauterbrunnen but without the snow peaks above. The mountains are of harsh bare rock rising steeply out of the pine forests while on the valley floor are chalets and hotels spread thinly along the road. The road itself extends through the town though most traffic stops at Kandersteg, it being the rail link south. No road crosses the mountains from here. Kandersteg seems a pleasant town and will deserve another visit in the future as I’m too tired for any serious exploration tonight.

Later in the hotel bar, three locals, who resembled Michael Schumacher and his Ferrari team in their matching red and white jackets, arrived and I got talking to one of them whose name was Thomas.

He drunkenly assured me that Kandersteg was the best place to live in the whole of Switzerland – no, the World. He wasn’t from here – I think he’d said Zurich – but had moved seventeen years before and stayed. The main reason he cited for his choice of favourite town was the friendliness of the people here. I’d certainly had a warm welcome at the hotel and now I was chatting away to total strangers so I guess he had a point. I was reluctant to leave the warm friendly atmosphere of the bar as I was feeling somewhat homesick again.
