A week passed. Not much got done on the ranch because of constant rain showers. The threat of floods became a problem. Cassidy used the two weeks to support Lincoln. Throwing Peter off the ranch wasn't an option, although Cassidy sure wanted to throw the boy off the ranch faster than she could blink an eye. The week of the rain was one of the hardest for Cassidy because her faith and commitment to Lincoln was thrown into a ranch pan and flipped over and over and over. Peter was a mess—and a real smart mouth. Having Peter in her home was like having a sharp piece of glass that someone walking around with bare feet kept stepping on.

Oh, if that boy smarts off to me one more time...I'm gonna kill him! I'm grateful Mae and Charlie are both at school...Melissa is still in Denver...Lincoln is in town with Riley looking at some lumber...it's just me and Peter. Please, Lord, give me strength. Cassidy ran a pair of angry hands through her blonde hair and then quickly brushed at a gray work shirt the way she did when her nerves were worked up. “Eat your lunch, Peter.”

“You call this lunch...” Peter pushed a plate of tuna helper away from him. “What am I...two years old? I need a beer--”

“You need to eat!” Cassidy marched over to a worn down kitchen table and looked into the face of a drug addict that was suffering through severe withdraws. This boy looks like he's a walking dead corpse...with a smart mouth, of course. Why did Lincoln leave me here with him? I know...Lincoln had to leave or kill his own son...the same for Riley and Jack. This boy has a way of making you want to skin him alive within seconds of meeting him. “And if I catch you with a beer...or any drugs...I'll kill you with my bare hands.”

Peter raised a pair of red eyes up and saw a face that sent a deep fear down the back of his heart. Cassidy was a woman...sure...but she was a ranch woman who knew how to use a kitchen knife...a gun...a hammer...and even worse...her bare hands. Peter knew Cassidy could beat the living breath out of him in a fight. The woman knew how to tangle with a wild grizzly bear and hold her own. “Look, fix me a sandwich, okay?”

“You'll eat what's cooked. Those are the rules.” Cassidy slid Peter's plate back to him. “When you finish eating go out to the chicken coop and collect some eggs--”

“What? No way...I ain't touching some nasty chicken eggs. Are you nuts?” Peter objected, looking at Cassidy as if she were insane. “Man...I really need a hit...” Peter ran his hands through his stringy black hair. “Just keep remembering the dumpster...those rats...”

Before Cassidy could say another word to Peter a hard hand struck the back door. “Now who could that be? I didn't hear anyone pull up...” Cassidy studied Peter for a second and then decided to answer the back door.
