Chapter 6
Jacobâs eyes shot open with a start. There was no morning light, and his alarm clock hadnât sounded, but he was ready to get out of bed, of that he was quite certain. He had a big day ahead of him, most of which involved heading up to the comic book store. He threw his blankets aside and immediately sat up, dropping his feet to the floor, and to his horror, when he tried to stand up, shooting pains greeted his feet, causing him to sink back onto the bed. He stopped himself just short of screaming out in pain, but that pain seemed to be coming from everywhere along the bottom of his foot.
âWhat on earth?â He demanded as he reached down to feel the bottoms of his feet. He could feel the cracks running mostly vertical, each one incredibly sensitive to the touch. What had happened down there? He used his free hand to flip the battery powered light beside his bed into the on position and took a long hard look at the exposed skin. Surely this couldnât have been the result of him not wearing socks, could it? They couldnât have made that much of a difference. He glanced over at the pile of laundry that had accumulated in the corner of his room and shrugged. That surely had nothing to do with it. He gingerly touched a few areas of his foot and winced as they all hurt just the same. It didnât matter, though, not much. All he had to do was wait for a while, and Dorothy would most certainly get around to cleaning his laundry, especially if it sat in that corner for long enough. It would begin to stink, after all, and she was all about keeping a clean, healthy home! Still...
Jacob rolled forward off the bed, thudding against the floor as he landed directly onto his kneecaps. For this task, he didnât actually trust his feet. Even though they werenât touching the ground, he could still feel the searing pain as they dragged behind him.
âSo this must be what it feels like to be a cripple,â Jacob muttered as he made his way to the pile of laundry. After much struggling, he finally reached it and wrapped his hands around a pair of socks. They were dirty but they would certainly do.
He turned them over in his hands for a moment and contemplated the fact that unlike all of their other clothes, these werenât handmade. He had asked Dorothy about it once, and she claimed that she and Thomas had combed the Ordnung over and over, top to bottom, but found no reference to a ban on elastic socks. He contorted his body and slid the socks over his feet, paused for a moment, and then dug another pair of socks from the pile, pulling those on as well. Satisfied the he had created some sort of padding between his feet and the floor, he stood up with the help of his bedpost, and then breathed a sigh of relief.
