Chapter 3

JOHN AND RUTH YODER are worried about their son. The second oldest of their eight children, Zach is the first to experience this kind of rumspringa discontent. His older sister, Sarah, had barely dipped her toe in the rumspringa pond before marrying and taking the kneeling vow.

Now the peace of their household is disrupted by Zach’s growing disquiet. He’s stayed on the farm to help with the chores, but he goes out more and more, and is at the house less and less. His absence nurtures their doubt about his present activities, and, much more importantly, about his future.

At fifty-three-years-old, John Yoder sits among the elders in the community. It is both a privilege and a responsibility, and Zach’s restlessness is starting to reflect upon John in the eyes of his peers, and of the community. He takes counsel with them on the matter from time to time, especially now that winter keeps him from working the fields, as he’d prefer to do. There are only so many weeds to pull on a beet farm as efficiently run as the Yoder farm.

And while John is helping a fellow town elder replace the front door of his house, the elder helps him with whatever advice or wisdom he can muster on the boy’s fall from grace with the Amish way of life. And since that elder is none other than Deacon Aaron Kopp, the graying, expanding, spiritual leader of the community, John could hardly go to a more qualified person to help.

The two carry the heavy cedar door into place, perpendicular to the doorway. They’ve already screwed the hinges into the door, and now they line up the hinges with the door jamb, wedging a beam of wood under it to hold the door in place, while they start twisting the screws into the jamb.

Deacon Kopp says, “There may be no more danger to letting him go, than in forcing him to stay.”

“If he chooses to stay,” John says, “then I’m not forcing him.”

“If he chooses to stay,” Deacon Kopp repeats, twisting the screw into the wood. “And if not?”

“Then he’ll change his mind. He’s my son, Deacon. I’m not going to let him throw his life away. I’m not letting any of my kids make that kind of mistake.”

“But what mistakes will you be making in the bargain?”

John shakes his head, hoping not to show too much disrespect. “Look at us, Aaron, in our fifties now. Whatever our mistakes, what difference does it make? But Zach is just seventeen, and some mistakes, you spend your whole life paying for.”
