As I walk, I think about my friends, especially Linda, Peter, and Ted, one of whom is grieving a sudden death, the other two on what may well be the last journey of their lives. I think about death and dying, about what happens next, about Heaven and hell and resurrection. When someone dies, one of two options opens up: either some form of life goes on or it does not. Pretty clear options, it seems to me. It is my belief that, when we die, it’s over. The composite parts, the molecules and atoms that we think of as “us” rejoin the rest of the earth’s biosphere, either slowly through burial or quickly through cremation (I am thinking now of Western cultures). Either way, based on conservation of energy, nothing is lost. The atoms that used to be me are recycled as part of, let’s say, a butterfly or a truck tire. I prefer the butterfly but I don’t think I get a choice in this selection.
