Chapter Eleven

“So this is what you wanted those permits for.” Scanning the map of the area he’d sketched out for her, Mark shook his head. “This isn’t going to work.”

“Of course it will.” Leah moved over beside him and dropped down onto the sofa, her pink slacks and white shirt making her look fresh and soft like the roses blooming out in front of her house.

Mark couldn’t help but notice, the entire time he was arguing with her.

“See?” she said, pointing one long delicate finger at the map. “We can stop here for lunch. And then the small area we are having built out there with Mrs. Culpepper and the Sheriff’s permission to make it handicapped accessible will be perfect to end up over here.” She pointed to another area.

Shaking his head, he argued, “That’s not the point, Leah.” He was finding that the woman could be stubborn when it came to what she wanted. “I’m sure that this would work perfectly with the ramp you convinced them to build over the gully. That is, if you wanted to spend an extra day out there. We’re going to have to cut the trail you’ve laid out in half.”

“I don’t think so.”

“How fast can someone in braces travel?” he asked bluntly.

Leah paused. “Well, in school—”

“We won’t be in school, chérie. We’re going to be out on the trail—a rough trail. Now, I agree with your idea, letting them see the flora and fauna of the area, sitting around a campfire for a night, but this short two-day route you’ve mapped out won’t work for a kid in braces. You’ll have to take more breaks, slow down the walking and add more to your program as you go to take up time for the added delay.”

Leah’s chin went up, surprising Mark.

“How can you be so sure you’re right?” she asked.

“How can you be so sure you’re right?” he countered.

Consternation flashed in Leah’s eyes. “We’re at a draw, it seems, Mark.”

“Any of the kids that are going to be there in braces live here in Hill Creek?” he asked.

Leah shook her head. “No. And the only one in a wheelchair will be Becca.”

“I don’t think your wheelchair is going to be the problem,” Mark offered now. “That’s more stable than legs and canes. I honestly think, though, we need to make sure about this before you go ahead and submit this plan.”

“But how?”

“I don’t—”

“Wait!”

Mark blinked. “Okay, chérie,” he said causing her to blush.

“I meant, I have an idea. Since the hospital is one of our sponsors for this event perhaps they’d be willing to lend us some leg braces and we could test it out on our own.”

Staring at her, he had to admit it was a good idea. He’d make sure to get his point across that way. He was certain he or Leah could walk that with no problem, but a bunch of kids, on braces—he just wasn’t so sure. “Who would you contact?”

“The administrator. Wait here.”

Leah jumped up and rushed toward the kitchen.
