Chapter Twenty-Six
The crisp cold air of January stung his cheeks as Major Dalton made his way to the promenade that ran along the river. He knew what time he had to be there and the best place to sit for the drama that was about to unfold. When the young Hitler fell into the water, he was determined to save him, but his intervention wasn’t necessary. Johann Kuehberger pulled the four-year-old out of the icy waters of the Inn River. The young boy shivered as people who had been walking by went down to the water’s edge to help. Someone put their coat over him as they led him home to his parents’ house. Dalton still had a flashback of the panicking eyes of a young boy about to drown. This made amends for his earlier murder.
His mission complete, the Major made his way back to the airplane. The pile of rocks that held the body of Captain Myers drew his attention. I can’t leave him here.
He un-piled the rocks, threw Myers over his shoulder and struggled, carrying the body back up into the cockpit. The captain’s seat was still covered in blood. He dropped the body in it, then strapped it down into the seat.
It was an exhausting effort. He set the controls on the Vmax to bring the plane back to the 21st Century. On the way back down the side of the airplane, he noticed the bullet holes with oil coming out of them. “No,” he exclaimed. His heart sank. The oil tanks that had been moved to the side to allow room for storage had made the plane vulnerable to small arms fire. Several bullets had hit it. “No,” he moaned again. He put his flight suit over the period clothes, not knowing where he would end up when the plane went down. He didn’t have enough gas to get back to America, but if he could get back to his own time, he could figure out a way to get home.
Knowing that he didn’t have a choice, he would either have to fly the airplane out of there, or destroy it. Technology like that didn’t belong in the 1890s. He climbed into the cockpit and fired up the engine. To his relief, it started.
He took off from the forest, gaining altitude until he was clear, then he throttled the plane forward. He had to reach back behind him, to where Meyers was, to switch on the Vmax drive. It pushed the plane faster, but only for a few seconds. The drive began to smoke badly, then shut off.
It was still smoking as he rocketed across the sky, but nothing he could do would turn the drive back on again. It was frozen. Turning his plane to the west, all he could do was to fly as far as he could, then crash the plane, to destroy it.
As he flew over Germany and France, he realized that only the Vmax drive had been damaged. It had
