Chapter 7
Georgian London
The first city anywhere in the world to reach a population of a million, the fact that so much of Georgian London has survived intact – public buildings as well as private ones, and in places such as Belgravia and Bloomsbury entire, unspoilt streets and squares – explains why it is perhaps the earliest version of the capital that the visitor can properly visualize and understand.
Immense fortunes were established during this period (some of which survive today), for example by the owners of outlying fields who cleverly transformed them into highly prized streets and squares. As England asserted its dominance over much of the world, so London did over the rest of the country; although home to just 10 per cent of the population, London controlled as much as 75 per cent of the country’s trade.
