Chapter Eight

“You haven’t done anything,” Della said some time later, sifting her fingers through his hair, “other than help me.”

Rey sat back on his heels, smiling wryly. “But I have,” he confessed, lifting his head and looking her in the eye. “I have lusted after you mightily, my girl. It’s ridiculous for a grown man like me.”

“I wish that didn’t frighten me,” she said apologetically, though she didn’t feel frightened really or even repulsed. She felt uncertain, both thrilled and chilled, pleased in a way that made her think of his kiss but worried that anything more would spin her into a deep panic. “You won’t tell anyone what happened, will you? It’s never the same when people know.”

“It’s not always bad, though, is it?” Rey asked, rising from his knees to sit next to her on the futon.

She thought about it.

“No, I guess not. I do feel better that you know.” She looked down at her hands. She hated her hands. They were the hands of a child, not the hands of a mother. “I didn’t like what you were thinking about me before.”

“I didn’t like it, either,” Rey said softly, “but, Della, foolishness is more easily overcome than trauma. I know a thing or two about trauma. Have you seen anyone, a specialist?”

She nodded. “The counselor that my parents took me to see tried to convince me to give up my baby, so I stopped going to her.”

“You need a crisis group, a targeted program.”

“And when would I go to that?” she interrupted. “I have one day a week off now. I want to spend my time with Dylan, not reliving the worst night of my life.” She shook her head. “I shouldn't even go on Friday. I don’t have enough time with him as it is.”

Rey got up to stand in front of her, his hands at his waist, his handsome, slender face solemn.

“Come to the performance on Friday,” he urged. “Please. I won’t tell another soul what you’ve told me tonight, and I won’t pester you about counseling. But come on Friday. If you can’t come just to enjoy yourself, then come for me. And for Amalie and JoJo and the others.”

How could she say no to that? She didn’t really want to say no, but she wasn’t sure what she ought to do. Since she’d decided to have Dylan and raise him herself, doing the right thing had become strangely important to her.

On one hand, Dylan would always be her number one responsibility. On the other hand, Rey and the rest of the band had been so good to her. Surprisingly, she felt ten pounds lighter now, just knowing Rey no longer believed that she slept around. It made all the difference somehow.

Still, while she couldn’t say no to Friday, she couldn’t say yes, either, so instead, she got to her feet and said, “Don’t tell Mary Sofia.”

“I won’t. I’m not going to go telling everyone your private business.”

Della lifted a hand to pat his chest, clarifying her request.
