CHAPTER 7

Danny awoke to the sound of light rain against the top of the semi. He sat up to find Gwen and Antoine playing cards at the small table. “How long have I been out?”

Antoine glanced at his watch. “Six hours.”

Gwen played her next card. “We divided up the corn flakes, so you can eat yours whenever you want. I was starving, so I ate half of mine earlier.”

“Thanks.” Danny pulled the privacy curtain over a bit further and looked out at the rain. “What about the water?”

“We each drank part of one of the half-liters with our corn flakes. A third of it is still left, so that’s yours next to the bed.” Antoine laid down another card.

Danny was parched, so he unscrewed the cap and sipped the water. “There’s gotta be a way to catch some of this rain for drinking water.”

“Not without getting out of the truck and being seen.” Gwen didn’t look up from her cards.

Danny looked toward the top bunk. “Where are those wire hangers and trash bags?”

“I put the trash bags in my pack and the coat hangers are under the mattress on the top bunk,” Gwen answered.

“Can you get those trash bags for me? And can I have the duct tape from your pack, Antoine?”

The two of them laid their cards face down on the table.

“Here you go.” Antoine handed the tape to Danny.

Gwen gave him the hangers and trash bags.

“Thanks.” Danny fashioned a frame from the hangers then taped a trash bag to the frame. He created a small reservoir at the bottom and sat the contraption in the driver’s seat with several inches of it sticking out the broken window. The falling rain trickled down the bag and into the reservoir. It was a slow process, but a little water would make a big difference.

The day passed slowly, but night time finally came. Danny went back over the plan one more time to make sure everyone was well versed in the details.

Gwen would have to get through the fence, open the valves of the Air National Guard Fuel tanks, as well as the valves on the fuel trucks. She’d have to light the fire then retreat via the tree line one mile south then two miles west to get out of the airport, through the south side of the train yard. From there, she’d still have another mile to follow the power line clearing, which would take her to the bank of the river. She would wait there for Danny and Antoine.

Danny and Antoine would sneak up to the north side of the airport and take out the two guards at the fuel tanks. Then, they’d slip around to the side and kill the other four guards before any of them could get off a shot. Next, they would open the tanks, let them drain for at least five minutes then light the fire.
