Maxim eases Gabe onto a tool bench that Zephyr has finished clearing. “What can we do to help?”

Gabe turns to look at both Palorians. “Thank you-you, my friends. I have-have a self-repair routine already set up-up in the main computer-er. I will have to shut-shut down while it runs.” He turns and lies flat on the bench.

Maxim looks up, noticing what looks like an autodoc, but instead of medical implements at the ends of the multiple limbs, he sees engineering tools. “That’s new.”

Zephyr looks up and nods. “Gabe has been planning for this, it seems.” She looks down and smiles.

Gabe nods once. “Indeed-eed I have.” He does not say anything else. His functional left eye dims and his body slumps just enough that both Palorians realize their friend has gone into standby mode. Above them, the multi-limbed device lowers its limbs, stretching and flexing like an athlete preparing to take the field.

Zephyr watches. “Well, okay then.” She reaches for Maxim’s hand. “Think they’ll be okay?”

Maxim shrugs. “I’d hoped we could do more, but taking Nortran out of the picture should ease the pressure. I hope it’s enough.”

She squeezes his hand. “Me, too. Let’s go get cleaned up.”
