Chapter Fifteen

CO’s Conference Room, TSS Vella Gulf, Dantar System

“So that’s it, sir,” Calvin said, recounting their story. “We blew another hole so we could get out, took our…guests up to the shuttles, and returned here.”

“And I see you finally got your wound treated?” Admiral Sheppard asked.

“Yes sir. Corporal Faulkner fixed me up on the way back. She’s as good at patching wounds as she is at drawing blood.”

“So, the only thing left is to decide what to do with you,” Sheppard said, looking at Proprietor Gooji.

“The smartest choice would be to let me go and leave,” the proprietor said. “That course of action has the greatest chance of the emperor not sending out a force to destroy you.”

“I don’t think so.”

“And why is that?”

Admiral Sheppard smiled. “Because we are here on the emperor’s business.”

“How so?”

“Easy. He sent us to fight your enemy.”

“Well, then perhaps you should go fight the enemy and leave our planet alone. You are disrupting many projects that are in work.”

“I can’t,” Sheppard said.

“Why not?” the proprietor asked.

“Two reasons, actually. First, because the emperor said I could get help from anyone I need to fight your enemy for you. I understand you are doing good things with artificial intelligence, and my people would like to talk to your scientists about that. Second, because I’ve seen what this system looks like after your enemy came through it.”

“You…what?”

“I’ve seen what this system looks like after your enemy’s been through it.” He chuckled at the obvious look of confusion on the Kaldan’s face. “Yes. Before you ask, we’re from the future.”

“What…How?”

“It’s a long story. Suffice it to say, the emperor believes us and is supporting us as we try to save the galaxy from the enemy you’re fighting.”

“Why? What happens?”

“Your enemy—which is also our Enemy in our time—is going to destroy this whole galaxy, eating civilizations as it goes. This planet will be stripped to nothing. In our time, it is a vacant wasteland. If that’s what you want, that’s fine; we’ll move right along and leave you to be fodder for your enemy.”

“Wait…this is all going too fast,” the Kaldan said, his appendages fluttering. “I thought we had the enemy contained.”

“Contained?” Sheppard laughed. “Your forces have fought them several times, and you have lost every time. Yes, the enemy has gone the opposite way down the star chain, but once they reach the end of it, they will come back this way. And, when they get here, they will sweep aside the frigates you have waiting to defend your stargate with no trouble. After that, they will consume the life force of every person on this planet.”

“But…but the general is working on setting up defenses!” the proprietor exclaimed, looking at General Corvarre, who was sitting next to him.

“The general is underfunded, undermanned, and underprepared. If the enemy shows up tomorrow, there is little he can do to stop them.”

“But he has tanks!”

“He has a few tanks at his base, with no way to deploy them. And, even if he could deploy them, I don’t see what good they would do against the enemy.
