Pencak Silat
Besides soccer, badminton—and perhaps competitive surfing—Indonesia’s only other obvious contender for status of “national sport” is the martial art known as pencak silat. This name is actually a catch-all term for the dozens of traditional fighting styles to be found in Indonesia. Virtually every region and ethnic group has its own martial traditions, and pencak silat features a huge diversity of styles and techniques, both armed and unarmed. However, virtually all these regional varieties have traditionally been seen as more than mere sports or martial skills: at its highest level pencak silat is usually regarded as having a spiritual element, and the greatest masters are often rumored to have skills that stray into the realms of the supernatural.
