20 – Two Orcs and a Shadow Elf Walk into a Bar

“Connect to Virtual,” Wyatt commanded.

His connection to the Virtual had been built into the lifepod once his body had deteriorated to the point where he could not live outside of it. His pod flooded with a special nanogel engineered by Dr. Ravello. It was one of the few ways he could still feel anything on his failing body. He’d noticed the sensations gradually lessening over the last few months and had asked Dr. Ravello to inject more of the nanomachines. They made a difference, but how long before he’d require more?

His living room, with expansive views of the surrounding mountains, vanished, and he found himself in the Virtual Lobby, filled as usual with a mix of users in avatars ranging from fantastical creatures to impossibly attractive humans with exaggerated features, large eyes, small mouths. Wyatt guessed they were guild members from the anime world of Kokoro.

Wyatt appeared as his favorite avatar, a blue orc named Thragos Grimstrike. For years, the Virtual had been his only world, his only way to touch life as existence in the Reals slipped away until his body could only be sustained in the lifepod. If technology allowed, he would have happily lived out his life in the Virtual, but consciousness transfer, even by NSMZ scientists, had not been achieved. Although it was a current project by many Virtual researchers and engineers, the reality of full consciousness transfer was still decades away.

In the Virtual, he had a grand citadel. An orc girlfriend, Ghorza Ironspite. A guild full of friends and allies, who he gathered with for endless adventures as new worlds were added. And since Piper owned Imagine Worlds, he and his friends were always the first to beta test new realms.

Earlier today, Dr. Ravello had contacted him. The lab was close to being finished, but he didn’t want to wait to start delving into the mystery of who had murdered his parents. Once he was cured—he had faith in Dr. Ravello—he wanted to have some solid leads in place. It was time to tell Piper of his suspicions, and of his worsening condition and Dr. Ravello’s lab that offered hope.

Uncle Matteo had always been a kind person. It was difficult to believe that he could be behind the death of his own brother. Wyatt remembered holidays with Uncle Matteo and his cousins. They had been more like friends, until his disease had progressed and he was moved to the lifepod. Now, they barely spoke. His cousin, Tristan, had been one of his closest friends, and still had an orc berserker in his guild.

Wyatt pushed through the crowded Virtual lobby with menacing grunts, people dodging out of the path of his seven-foot, blue orc, with two big tusks protruding from his jutting bottom jaw.

He took a portal to the Ziaphus gateway, the medieval home world of orcs, trolls, shadow elves, goblins, and hell centaurs.

The main spawn point dropped him into Agramount Stronghold, the main fortress city of the orc nation.
