219. When Is a Screw Cap Used?

Teacher’s was the first whisky marketed with a screw cap, in 1913.

There are no guidelines on screw caps—it is up to the preference of the distiller. Many whiskies are bottled with a screw cap, even old bottlings such as Gordon & MacPhail’s Connoisseurs Choice range. When applied tightly, it is an excellent way to seal off a bottle.

220. When Is a Cork Used?

When a descendant of the Teacher family invented the screw cap in 1913, the usage of cork gradually declined but managed to make a comeback several decades ago. Single malt whiskies and the more expensive varieties are usually corked. It is advisable to turn an unopened bottle upside down regularly to keep the cork moist. A “corked” whisky (whisky contaminated by cork taint) is rare.
