Chapter Eleven:

As Maa expected, the doors of the summoning room remained open. The dead lay where they fell, motionless. None jumped up to greet the small group as Maa led them through the blood-splattered mage building.

Rather than burst into the deadly room, Maa paused at the doors, taking a moment to assess the situation. She might not fear death, but she wasn’t overeager to visit that new realm. That adventure can wait for a long time.

She expected Zoe’s quick retort that never came.

The room seemed as she left it last.

The dead female lay where Maa killed her. The shredded blue robe had turned purple from the gory wounds. The blood, impossibly still wet, glistened in the limited light cast by the magic door etched into the wall.

Her reality remained in flux. Unsure if what she thought to be true was all made up by her or somehow implanted into her memories. Impossible recollections etched into her fragile mind. If she’d not witnessed the attack firsthand, she never would have believed it. There was a small part of her that hoped the horror that happened in this room was some sordid nightmare. Now it seemed the dead planned to stay that way, though the guardian remained standing.

The men huddled at the doorway. She assumed the bizarre décor of the dark magical room overwhelmed their limited courage. Maa was unsure how she wasn’t afraid. She had felt little in the way of fear since Zac was murdered.

Perhaps she wasn’t insane, simply overwhelmed by events. Farther in, the two black-clad Dregs remained next to the podium. Dead, just like she left them. The black clothing did a better job of hiding their grisly wounds. A quick search for the weapons proved them missing. Maa slapped her fist into her thigh to conceal her disappointment.

Just beyond the pair stood the nameless guard. He had regained his post. A silent watch, gripping the book that served as Mel’ock’s prison. All Maa needed to do was convince someone else to deal with that guardian, grab the damned deadly tome… and manage to escape with her life. It might be easier to slip a struggling cayman through the eye of a needle.

There was a great deal of risk involved with the enterprise. Even from halfway across the room, it was easy to see the damage caused by the Dregs had miraculously repaired. The guardian stood as pristine as any desiccated corpse might be.

Maa pointed to the standing dead man. “Someone will need to cut that thing’s head off.” She didn’t mean to whisper. She doubted the dead would react to her voice, but the words still came out muted. They matched the dark mood perfectly.

“You do it,” a faceless voice called from the group of cowards.

She hissed over her shoulder, “Weaklings,” Maa challenged them all. “Give me a blade, and I’ll gladly do the job if you’re not man enough. Someone will need to grab the book while I deal with the body.”

They remained hesitant.

Maa stepped into the room.
