Chapter 11

Ten minutes later, after Alexandra had put on her gloves and hat and dug her parasol out of the bottom of her trunk, they set out. Alexandra looked around more openly than she had before, taking in everything from the board sidewalks and the people who walked on them, to the shop buildings on the principal streets, with their tall false fronts.

“I pointed out the bookstore already, but I don’t think I mentioned that the city council is debating whether they should build a library or not.” Pete said.

That caught Alexandra’s interest right away. “A library would be lovely,” she said. “A city can never have too many books. Especially somewhere like this, out in the west.”

“Hey, don’t be too quick to judge us frontier folk. We’re not so bad.” He smiled at her and winked. “And I think you’ll like it here. It’s a small place, but it’s more civilized than the papers would have you think.”

“How did you pick Wyoming?” Alexandra asked. “When people talk about the west, they mention places like Texas or California. I’d never heard of Cheyenne until I saw your ad in the paper.”

He looked up thoughtfully, thinking a moment before answering.

“Well, they told us there were mountains in Wyoming. I think Ma thought it would remind her of Knoxville. It turns out there are plenty of mountains in Wyoming, just not in Cheyenne,” he said with a chuckle.

Alexandra looked at him, her curiosity piqued. “Why did you leave Knoxville? It sounds like you were happy there.”

A shadow passed over Pete’sface at her question, and his relaxed expression disappeared. “Well, in my family we don’t talk about that much. It was the war, you know. A lot of things happened.”

Alexandra nodded slowly. She could understand that. And she didn’t want to push this newfound ease between them too far and destroy it. They had come a long way since her arrival and there was still some distance to go for their relationship.

“Well, I’m glad to be here, whatever the reason,” she said. “I spent a fair amount of time the last few years reading about the frontier in books and newspapers. I never would have imagined I would get to come out here myself.”

Pete laughed. “Well, train travel definitely makes things a great deal easier. I don’t know if many women would be eager to answer newspaper ads if they had to take the long way out on a wagon train or a stage coach. Though I have heard that some do.”

Frowning, Alexandra considered this carefully. “I would do it. I would put up with a lot to get away from Suellen. I would probably run out of books, though, with such a long journey.”

“Of course, you would. I think now that you’re here, Cheyenne will be able to support another dozen bookstores.”

Alexandra scowled at him, blushing, and Pete laughed again.

“Relax, I’m just teasing you. You can have as many books as you can fit in the house. I’ll even get more bookshelves as you need them.
