âBotheration!â Reginald exclaimed as he stared through his spyglass.
Hawthorne glanced over at him. âWhatâs wrong?â
Reginald lowered the spyglass. âMr. Wymond brought a puppy to woo Evie with.â
âYou take issue with that?â
âEveryone knows that women find puppies irresistible,â Reginald said.
Hawthorne gave him an amused look. âI do not think that is a written rule.â
âIt may as well be.â
âNow that weâve determined that Evie is safe, it would be best if we let her enjoy her carriage ride with Mr. Wymond,â Hawthorne suggested.
Reginald shook his head. âI donât think that is wise.â
âAnd why is that?â
âEvie hates carriage rides through Hyde Park,â Reginald said. âShe doesnât like to feel like she is on display.â
âBut it isnât the fashionable hour,â Hawthorne pointed out.
âMaybe Mr. Wymond asked her to go on a carriage ride in such a way that she was unable to refuse.â
âI doubt that. Evie is not one to be swayed so easily. Her excuses are legendary.â
âRegardless, someone is trying to kill her, and we need to ensure that she remains unharmed,â Reginald said. âEvie may not care about her safety, but I do.â
Hawthorne glanced skyward and sighed. âAnd you think lurking in the woodlands nearby will keep her safe?â
âI do.â There were better ways to protect Evie, but Reginald didnât want to make his presence known. Not yet. He had just shown up at her townhouse to speak to her when Mr. Wymondâs carriage merged into traffic. Heâd followed her to Hyde Park, not fully thinking through the repercussions of his actions. Now they were in the woods, and he was beginning to think this wasnât his finest idea.
Mr. Wymondâs coach came to a stop a short distance away under the shade of the trees. If Reginald listened carefully, he could hear Evieâs laughter drifting on the wind. He tightened his hold on his spyglass until his knuckles grew white. He wanted to be the one to make her laugh.
âPerhaps we should go,â Hawthorne suggested.
âNo!â Reginald exclaimed. âEvie should have never put herself in danger by going on a carriage ride.â
âI agree, but there is nothing that can be done about it.â
âYes, there is,â Reginald said as he took a step forward.
Hawthorne moved quickly and stepped in front of him, blocking his path. âI would advise you to stop and think about what you are about to do.â
âI know precisely what I am doing.â
âDo you? Because it almost appears as if you are a jealous suitor.â
âI am no such thing. I am Evieâs partner, and Iâm trying to keep her safe.â
Hawthorne lifted his brow. âStay in the shadows and guard her, but donât approach her,â he said. âI promise you that it will not end well for you if you do otherwise.â
âYou donât know that for certain.â
âI donât need a crystal ball to decipher it.â
Reginald shifted in his stance. Hawthorne was right. If he approached Evie, it wouldnât end well. But he couldnât just stand here and do nothing. Her life was in peril!
Coming to a decision, he stepped aside to go around Hawthorne when he saw Evie approaching them through the cluster of trees.
