“Botheration!” Reginald exclaimed as he stared through his spyglass.

Hawthorne glanced over at him. “What’s wrong?”

Reginald lowered the spyglass. “Mr. Wymond brought a puppy to woo Evie with.”

“You take issue with that?”

“Everyone knows that women find puppies irresistible,” Reginald said.

Hawthorne gave him an amused look. “I do not think that is a written rule.”

“It may as well be.”

“Now that we’ve determined that Evie is safe, it would be best if we let her enjoy her carriage ride with Mr. Wymond,” Hawthorne suggested.

Reginald shook his head. “I don’t think that is wise.”

“And why is that?”

“Evie hates carriage rides through Hyde Park,” Reginald said. “She doesn’t like to feel like she is on display.”

“But it isn’t the fashionable hour,” Hawthorne pointed out.

“Maybe Mr. Wymond asked her to go on a carriage ride in such a way that she was unable to refuse.”

“I doubt that. Evie is not one to be swayed so easily. Her excuses are legendary.”

“Regardless, someone is trying to kill her, and we need to ensure that she remains unharmed,” Reginald said. “Evie may not care about her safety, but I do.”

Hawthorne glanced skyward and sighed. “And you think lurking in the woodlands nearby will keep her safe?”

“I do.” There were better ways to protect Evie, but Reginald didn’t want to make his presence known. Not yet. He had just shown up at her townhouse to speak to her when Mr. Wymond’s carriage merged into traffic. He’d followed her to Hyde Park, not fully thinking through the repercussions of his actions. Now they were in the woods, and he was beginning to think this wasn’t his finest idea.

Mr. Wymond’s coach came to a stop a short distance away under the shade of the trees. If Reginald listened carefully, he could hear Evie’s laughter drifting on the wind. He tightened his hold on his spyglass until his knuckles grew white. He wanted to be the one to make her laugh.

“Perhaps we should go,” Hawthorne suggested.

“No!” Reginald exclaimed. “Evie should have never put herself in danger by going on a carriage ride.”

“I agree, but there is nothing that can be done about it.”

“Yes, there is,” Reginald said as he took a step forward.

Hawthorne moved quickly and stepped in front of him, blocking his path. “I would advise you to stop and think about what you are about to do.”

“I know precisely what I am doing.”

“Do you? Because it almost appears as if you are a jealous suitor.”

“I am no such thing. I am Evie’s partner, and I’m trying to keep her safe.”

Hawthorne lifted his brow. “Stay in the shadows and guard her, but don’t approach her,” he said. “I promise you that it will not end well for you if you do otherwise.”

“You don’t know that for certain.”

“I don’t need a crystal ball to decipher it.”

Reginald shifted in his stance. Hawthorne was right. If he approached Evie, it wouldn’t end well. But he couldn’t just stand here and do nothing. Her life was in peril!

Coming to a decision, he stepped aside to go around Hawthorne when he saw Evie approaching them through the cluster of trees.
