“You’re back just in time for dessert,” Sarah said as Will walked in the door.

“Sorry I had to leave. Personal problem.” He hoped that explanation would cut it, because he did not know how to explain further without giving everything away.

“Don’t worry about it.” Sarah’s mom grinned. “We kept busy.”

The wine bottle sat empty on the table, and Mac was pouring port for everyone. He shot Will a sideways glance. “You want some?”

Will wanted all the alcohol. He once again reminded himself that Natasha was no one to be afraid of. He was tempted to ask about her, but he didn’t want Sarah or her family to think he was crazy. That seemed like a real possibility. Much more real than the chance that an old woman knew all the details of his personal life. “Yes, please.”

Mac handed him a full glass, and Will thanked him with a nod. He tipped up the glass of sweet liquor. Could he still get that ride to the Buck? He looked at Sarah, but based on the amount of giggles coming from her, he had a feeling she was beyond driving.

Fine by him. He knew there was more booze in this house.

He sat down at the table and shoved a forkful of cherry pie and vanilla bean ice cream into his mouth while he listened to Sarah’s family talk. Bart sensed Will’s distress, and began to whine and try to sit by Will, no matter how many times he directed the dog back to his bed.

Mac excused himself first, claiming he had an early wake-up call for a flight. Sarah’s mom asked him to help her back to the cabin, and Mac gladly obliged. Sarah’s dad went with them, leaving just Will and Sarah, and half a bottle of port.

The thick drink soon made him feel more relaxed, and the syrupy sweet taste was addictive. He reached for the bottle to pour another glass, but accidentally knocked it over instead.

He jumped up from his chair. “Oh God, I am so sorry.”

Will watched with horror as the spilled port turned the tablecloth from white to reddish purple.

“It’s okay.” Sarah swiftly moved everything off the table and gathered up the cloth. “I am going to get this in the washer.”

She disappeared from the room, leaving Will and Bart on their own.

Will covered his eyes with his hands. It wasn’t like him to be this clumsy. His head felt like sand, he was preoccupied, and if he was being honest with himself, a little drunk. The panic had sobered him up a bit, though.

He made his way to the laundry room to apologize to Sarah. “I’m so sorry, I’ll buy you another one. I’ll clean up the dishes. Whatever I can do to make it better, just tell me.”

He’d once spilled coffee on his and Rachel’s sofa, and Rachel had practically divorced him right then and there. It was one of the biggest fights they’d ever had, all over a stupid coffee stain. He’d do anything to avoid a similar situation with Sarah.
