Kimberly finished the emails that Brian had sent her and decided to go search for firewood. She reached into her backpack and pulled out a small gray four-inch metallic cube with one black button on the top. It had been a gift from one of her students. She pressed the button and then placed the cube on the ground. The cube was a form of liquid metal that could change its shape. It melted into a mouse shaped drone. The drone technology had the biomechanical characteristics of over 100 animals stored in its system. It could melt into any of the animals from its system and move as a near perfect copy of the selected creature, even including flying birds. The mouse stood up on its hind legs and waved at Kimberly and ran around her getting familiar with the area.
Kimberly wrote a quick program in the T-HUD and sent it to the mouse. The program was a set of instructions that told it where and how much firewood she needed. She converted her backpack into the hover car and set it to autopilot with a copy of the program sent to the autopilot system. The hover car and mouse were instructed to work together and obtain the needed firewood. The mouse melted into a canary and flew into the driverâs seat of the hover car, melting back into a mouse as it sat down.
The hover car flew to the top of the nearest tree and hovered in place. The mouse jumped out and onto a three-inch branch where it ran to the base next to the tree trunk. It melted into a small beaver and with a speed that could be only achieved as a drone, chewed through the branch in just a few seconds. As the branch fell from the tree, the hover car flew below it and caught it. The duo repeated this process until the cargo space of the hover car was full of branches. The beaver melted into a sparrow and flew beside the hover car as they returned to Kimberly loaded with firewood.
Kimberly could see the hover car returning with a large number of branches sticking out of the sides of the car. The branches looked too long to use for the fire and would need to be further processed. She used the T-HUD and created another program to drop off the branches into a pile and then have the mouse cut them into sticks six inches long.
Sending the program to the hover car and sparrow, she could see the hover car fly over to the designated site where it rotated upside down, dropping the branches into a makeshift pile. The sparrow then flew over to the pile and, as it landed, melted into the beaver again. Since it was liquid metal it could manipulate its tail in ways that a normal beaver couldnât. It wrapped its tail around a branch and pulled it off the pile.
The beaver then quickly started to cut the branch into six-inch lengths stripping the smaller branches off the main branch.
