Chapter Eighteen
The sun shone down brightly that afternoon. It lit the entire city of Tulsa with prisms of light as it glistened off the ice in the trees and the drifted snow that blanketed everything in sight. Although it was still below freezing outside, the sun made everything feel warm and glow with energy.
Kathleen wasnât sure if the winter storm was long gone or if this was just a brief respite with more snowfall to follow. In any event, she was undaunted.
The gauntlet had been thrown down, and she was determined not to let her Operation: Save This Day From Stinking fail.
Sam and Lucy were bewildered as they watched Kathleen scurrying through the house, garage, and attic, collecting items of clothing. Even though they didnât know what she was up to, their spirits were lifted with a sense of anticipation.
Finally, Kathleen got everything and everyone ready and ushered them into her back yard.
As they stood there observing the winter wonderland around them, Kathleen glanced at Lucy. She was bundled up in a motley collection of oversized, cast-off garments. Her ensemble was topped off by a furry hat with flaps covering her ears.
Lucy looked down and said, âLook at me. I look like I shrunk.â
Kathleen responded encouragingly, âYou look adorable, doesnât she, Sam?â
Sam smiled and nodded. âQuite fetching.â
Lucyâs eyes widened, and she grabbed the earflaps on her fur hat, pulling them away from her head. âI look like a dog.â
Sam laughed uproariously, but Kathleen tried in vain to cover her mirth and smiles.
Lucy playfully scolded them. âHey, people. Youâre supposed to be cheering me up.â
Kathleen surveyed the back yard and took charge of the situation, commanding, âOkay, okay. Follow me. Ready?â Without further explanation, Kathleen fell onto her back in the snow and started making a snow angel.
Lucy squealed and shouted, âOh! Snow angels! I love snow angels!â
She turned and fell back onto the snow next to Kathleen and began making her own snow angel. Sam looked on with a smile on his face.
Lucy looked up and said, âCome on, Sam.â
Kathleen chimed in, âYeah, Sam. Jump in.â
Sam looked around dubiously. âI donât think so.â
Lucy challenged him. âWhy not? You chicken?â
âYeah, Sam. You chicken?â Kathleen prodded. âOr maybe youâre a chicketarian.â
Sam was bewildered and looked at Kathleen questioningly.
Lucy rolled in the snow and roared with laughter. âChicketarian. I canât believe you said that.â
Lucy and Kathleen continued to laugh at Sam and taunt him mercilessly. Lucy jumped up and began tugging on Samâs arm. âJust try it. I want to see what you look like as an angel.â
Sam had a faraway, wistful look in his eye for a moment, then he gave in and finally turned and fell back into the snow. The other two cheered as they sat and watched Sam lying in the snow.
Kathleen looked down at Sam. âOkay now. Donât disappoint the little girl.â
Lucy added, âYeah. Donât disappoint me.â
âOh, all right. Here we go,â Sam said, resignedly.
Sam gave in to the moment and began flapping his arms and legs, creating his own snow angel.
