Chapter 6
Ben rolled his shoulders, trying to relieve the knot that felt more like a boulder lodged there. With Silas taking care of the livery, he had more time to tackle some of the bigger jobs heâd put off in the Smithy. His kind of tired was a good tired, though. Knowing Benjamin was with Miss Scott and staying out of trouble had eased his mind and allowed him to focus on the work at hand.
As he opened the gate in front of the Miller house, Benjamin ran out the front door. The boy called, âPa! I missed you.â Then jumped, knowing his Pa would catch him in mid-air.
Ben hugged the boy close. âHey, Benji, did you have a good day?â
âUh huh, Ma and I cleaned up Mrs. Millerâs garden.â He pushed back in his fatherâs arms to see his paâs face.
Dread filled Ben, âSon, I told you, Miss Scott is not going to be your Ma.â
Confusion lined the little boys face and eyes. âBut Pa, she said her name is Ma.â
Ben sat the little boy down and walked to the house. This had to be corrected. He did not want his little boy hurt by misunderstandings. He knocked on the door, wondering why Miss Scott hadnât come out when his son had.
She opened the door and stopped him in his tracks. He found it impossible not to return her disarming smile. All thoughts of questioning her fled his mind when she switched all that intensity to him. With a springy bounce, she stepped aside and motioned him in. The remoteness that had been in her eyes up to this point was missing, replaced with a hopeful glint and vivid excitement.
âCome in.â She chuckled. She nodded at Benjamin and raised her brows. âWeâve been waiting impatiently for you.â
Mrs. Miller stepped out of the kitchen. âCome in Ben. You have plans for supper? If not, we have plenty.â She shared a look with Miss Scott and laughed. âSeems we have a baker and cook on our hands.â
âWe wouldnât want to be a bother.â Ben replied hesitantly. âBut boy, it sure smells good in here.â
âNo bother at all,â she pointed to the washroom. âGo clean up and weâll have supper on the table in a few minutes.
Happy for a reason to stay and find out exactly what was going on between his son and Miss Scott, Ben hurried to wash up.
He noticed Benji had moved to stand beside Miss Scott. The little boy clutched the young womanâs hand so tight he could see his sonâs knuckles. âCome along, Benji. You can wash up, too.â
Benjamin looked up at Miss Scott for approval. He waited for her nod before he released her hand and joined his pa. That was certainly an improvement, wasnât it? Maybe letting Benjamin stay with the young woman had been a great idea. Or it could possibly be the worst mistake heâd ever made.
A few minutes later, he stood in the kitchen door and admired the table laden with mouthwatering food and forgot all his troubles.
