Chapter 22

Adam had just arrived back from his morning run when he saw Patrick waiting for him outside the door.

“What in the world …” he muttered to himself. Patrick had left numerous messages via email and on his cell phone but Adam had been so busy with Mackenzie that he’d neglected the guy. He hadn’t seen him since he’d seen the movie star.

The movie star.

Guilt melted his irritation. Patrick was a nice guy. He was also humble and lonely. Adam needed to help him, but the guy showing up like this was just plain bad timing.

He had plans for later. Mackenzie was coming over. He wanted to pick up a few things from the grocery store and then he was going to cook a nice meal for her. She had a party to deliver her arrangements to after work and he wanted to cook something special for her at his home.

She often came home late and tired on those evenings when she had a delivery to make. He’d seen it with his own eyes once when she’d come back from setting up flowers for a wedding reception and had been about to eat a leftover salad until he’d rustled her up some eggs and toast quickly, in her kitchen, while she’d sat at the table and watched him.

Today, he was going to do one better and she was finally going to come over to his place.

“Hey, dude.” Patrick slapped him on the back by way of a greeting. “I almost didn’t come.”

“Yeah?” Adam wished he hadn’t.

“I’m glad I took a chance.” Patrick shifted out of the way, letting Adam open the door.

“I’m busy today, Patrick. You should have checked.”

“I’ve called and left plenty of messages but you never got back to me.” Patrick bustled in after him.

“Sorry about that.” He owed Patrick. “I need to take a shower, buddy, but then I have things to do.”

Patrick was already sitting on Adam’s couch. He looked disappointed. “You still can’t fit me in?”

“I’m kinda busy.”

“But I haven’t seen you for weeks.” Patrick looked at him like an abandoned puppy, making Adam feel even worse. He’d been a lousy coach and none of this was Patrick’s fault.

Relenting, “Can we do half an hour today? I promise to make it up to you the next time we meet.”

“Will there be a next time?”

“Yes, there will. Sorry I haven’t returned your calls.”

“Half an hour will do. Mind if I drink this here?” Patrick took out a can of soda from his backpack. He seemed to have made himself at home, one leg bent at the knee and casually swung over the top of his other knee.

Startled, Adam had no choice but to let him. “Go ahead. What’s up? You said there were developments last time we met.” He hoped Patrick was making good progress. He sat down, his hands on his thighs as he willed Patrick to hurry this along. “Let’s hear it then. What’s going on?”

“She was crying, really loud, in her office, and
