I went downstairs and found a copy of The Little Prince. At that time, I didn’t know The Little Prince, so that was how I discovered it. The book William gave me was a big, pop-up one. I had to travel light and find what was essential to the trip and take only that with me. The book got selected together with some underwear, a swimsuit, a pair of jeans, raincoat and two T-shirts, and took the place of another pair of shoes. Somehow, though, I thought that book could have taken me farther than another pair of shoes, and I was right. I brought it with me, and kept reading it or just staring at those sweet, fun pop-up illustrations as I was traveling, and slowly I started feeling lighter and better and some magic and some peace returned. To my best friend, my rose read the inscription. I didn’t understand what that meant when I first read the book, and probably didn’t fully understand it even later. I remembered thinking that William might have written that sentence without actually giving it too much weight, perhaps trying to make me feel better, perhaps because he was sorry he had seen me cry before leaving. But now that I was revisiting the events, questioning my perception of them, I wondered if that was William’s genuine way to say that I was special to him and that’s what mattered.

I wandered through my memories a bit more, and as I was thinking of Mikhail, the evening together, the still water I had thought I was experiencing when we met, the water that was missing in my latest pieces, I lost myself somewhere in there and finally surrendered. I had dreamed the entire day and was so tired now. I needed to sleep.
