Ezra hammered down a piece of flashing, squinting against the sunlight glinting off the metal strip. He was primarily a carpenter, but his father and grandfather had been able to do almost anything with their hands, from building houses to plumbing, and they’d handed those skills down to Ezra.

But his mind wasn’t on the roof. Or even his house. As the sun shone brightly overhead and a chilly fall breeze whirled around him, the only thing on his mind was the pretty maedel in his kitchen. Pretty and quirky. Who knew she not only could handle mice, she also loved peanut butter. And George Washington. Not to mention her thoughtfulness toward the customers who bought her butter. He chuckled. Hannah Lynne was definitely an interesting girl, and unlike any other female he’d ever met.

He forced himself to focus on his task, because tumbling off the roof wasn’t on his to-do list today. Once all the holes in the roof were repaired, he slid down the ladder and went back to the kitchen, wondering what Hannah Lynne had accomplished this afternoon.

Who was he kidding? He just wanted to see her again—closer than when he’d seen her get clean water from the pump in the backyard.

Ezra smiled as he quietly entered the room. Her back was to him as she scrubbed out the sink, the tie of her white apron drooping a bit at her waist. She wore a light blue dress, the hem brushing against the back of her calves, which were covered in black stockings. She wasn’t a thin girl, but she also wasn’t stout. More like curvy . . .

He yanked his gaze from her, heat rising from his neck to his face. What was he doing, staring at Hannah Lynne like that? Yet it took every bit of internal strength not to look at her again.

She turned and dipped a sponge into her water bucket, then squeezed it out and continued to scrub. She’d been working all day, and her efforts showed. The window above the sink gleamed. The cabinet doors were no longer covered in dust, and the light honey-stained wood shone. The countertops were warped and would need to be replaced, but that hadn’t stopped her from tackling the dirt in the corners.

And she was doing all this for a quilt.

He wondered why the quilt was so important to her. His curiosity almost drove him to ask, but he pulled back. Her reason wasn’t his business. Today she’d done enough work to pay for the rest of the quilt—which he still wished she would have freely accepted from him.

“Hannah Lynne,” he said, surprised at the low, husky tone of his voice. He cleared his throat as she turned around.

“I’m almost done with the sink,” she said, wiping the back of her hand across her forehead. “I thought I’d work on the floor next.”

“Nee,” he said, going to her, recalling his vow that she wouldn’t scrub his floors. “You’ve done enough today.”

“But there’s still plenty of daylight.” She turned around and faced him, the back of her waist leaning against the sink.
