As for the Night Marchers, she has nothing more concrete than intuition to go on. What puzzles her most is not so much why they came, but what life-or-death battle they might portend. Her father’s? The one she’s about to fight for her career in Chicago? Or something entirely unforeseen?

As for Japhy, well, that’s simpler. At least she’s certain he was there last night; she can still feel him inside her. A fact that lets loose a flood of so many other sensations that one second she’s dipping her head and crossing her legs with a small private smile, and the next she’s hunched forward in her seat to gnaw on all they’ve left unsaid. She had run back to the house when roosters awakened them. Jolted into travel mode, she’d had no time for discussion.

If everything hadn’t been so surreal, if it had been first-time sex with any other man on the planet at this point in her life, she would have been more cautious. But Japhy doesn’t strike her as reckless, not at all, and he hadn’t hesitated, either. Why? Because they’d read each other right and neither one was worried? So it seems. Though she’s really too jazzed by the prolonged afterglow and groggy from lack of sleep to tell for sure.

Stevie sits up to gaze down on the canyon, cliffs, and shorelines of Kaua‘i as the plane gains altitude. From here, it looks like an island you could put your arms around.
