A Maiden Voyage

Kooky was aptly named. A stuffed toy with purple fuzz for hair that did nothing to match the giraffe-like spots on his round body, Vivienne couldn’t think of a better name for him.

She walked Kooky over to the large cylinder that occupied most of the room. The doors to the travel chamber, including the inner one, stood open.

Every one of Vivienne’s research assistants was present. They crowded around the travel chamber they had all done their part to build, leaving a path only for Vivienne. She would have the honor of delivering Kooky to the inner sanctum, where he would make this groundbreaking journey alone.

Vivienne was nervous. She had built much of the travel machine alone, and what she hadn’t, she’d closely supervised. Her theories were solid; her research and findings supported them. The machine meticulously reflected every understanding she had of time travel.

The problem was that there was so much she still didn’t know. She might never know all that she needed to predict time travel confidently. But there was nothing more any of them could do to prepare for what they hoped would be a monumental advancement in science.

Much of the international science community was aware that Dr. Vivienne Walshe was beginning tests that would either prove or disprove her radical hypotheses on time travel: mostly, that it was not only possible, but inevitable, in certain circumstances. The problem for her had been replicating the correct circumstances.

“Okay. Are we ready?” Vivienne turned to ask, even though she wasn’t certain that she was. So much depended on this one test, so much more than anyone surrounding her realized.

“Yep. We’re rolling.” Marcy answered from behind the lens of a camera and the faint whir of a videotape.

“Today is January twenty-first, 1995. This is our first attempt at time travel with inorganic matter.” Vivienne held up their test subject for the camera. “I will be placing this guy, Kooky, into the time travel chamber that we have both designed and constructed here in our lab. The outer shell is constructed of titanium, made to withstand the large amount of force that will build within.”

Marcy panned the length of the time machine, showing that its thick casing was bolted to the floor.

“The titanium shell surrounds a layer of air, meant to insulate from the greatest effects of the force we will be creating. Another titanium cylinder comes next. Within it, at its base, is a powerful magnet that will replicate the concentrated pull of gravity. Surrounding the magnet is a mechanism, which will vibrate intensely, causing the magnet to oscillate and pull down at the same time. Above it is a shelf of thick titanium. It sits on a thick pole, also of titanium, but the joint is not fixed. The tip of the pole is rounded, allowing the shelf to move in response to the motions of the vibrating magnet.

“This entire inner cylinder sits on a point, and a powerful motor will set the cylinder into motion, spinning it. It will pick up momentum.
