46.
“YOU GUYS ought to keep a closer eye on the boy,” Tommy said to the guards as they stepped out of the pod. “He’s not inside.”
“Oh no, not again!” the guards said.
They ran inside the pod to check for themselves.
“You’re welcome,” Hawk said, calling after them.
He moved for the jeep’s driver’s side.
“Uh-uh, I don’t think so,” Tommy said.
“Why not?” Hawk said, genuinely confused.
“We want to get to our destination in one piece,” Tommy said. “Guy, can you drive?”
“You’re not serious,” Hawk said.
“Guy?” Tommy prodded.
“I can drive,” Guy said. “And I can promise we’ll get there in one piece too.”
“Sounds good to me,” Tommy said, tossing him the keys.
Tommy moved around the jeep to the passenger’s door. Emin did the same on the backseat. She bent down to climb on board when she started back.
“Well, well,” she said. “Looks like we found our missing team member.”
Sitting on the backseat was a small boy, a big grin on his face. He had light brown mousy hair and a scar across one cheek.
“Can I drive?” he said excitedly.
“You must be Sean,” Tommy said. “Nice to meet you.”
“How did you get out here?” Emin said.
Sean shrugged. “People never used to notice me. When I turned into a zombie, they still didn’t take any notice.”
That wasn’t really an explanation, Tommy thought. He was a sneak.
“We’re a group of Walkers,” Tommy said. “People who were bitten by the zombies but still alive. We’re going on a mission to the city to find some bad people. Want to come with?”
“Do I get to shoot zombies?” Sean said.
Tommy considered the boy. He wasn’t sure he wanted to let the boy have a live weapon. But someone watching their back, even untrained like this boy, was better than nothing.
Hawk climbed into a backseat. He turned to look at Sean, whose mouth dropped open, eyes widening at the sight of Hawk.
“Don’t worry about him,” Emin said, climbing onto the seat. “There’s not a lot of room in here. How about you sit on my lap?”
“I don’t remember getting that offer,” Hawk grumbled to himself.
“Act more like a gentleman and you might,” Emin said, poking her tongue at him.
She lifted Sean and placed him on her lap as Guy got in on the other side. Sean still hadn’t taken his eyes off Hawk.
“Quit ssstaring,” Hawk said. “You’ll hurt my feelingsss.”
“What’s wrong with him?” Sean said.
“A lot,” Emin said. “But nothing serious.”
“Then why does he have that gear on?”
“He likes hockey,” Emin said with a shrug.
“Don’t you guys think we should tell the guards we found him?” Guy said.
“This’ll teach them to keep a closer eye on him in future,” Tommy said, glancing out the window and seeing them fetch their torches and heading into the darkness.
“It’s not really their fault,” Sean said. “I get itchy feet and need to keep moving. I don’t know what it is. I don’t mean to be bad.”
“You’re going to be moving a lot with us,” Emin said.
Sean grinned. He was like Peter Pan, Tommy thought. The boy who would never grow old.
