BECKY
There must be arc to it. She knows that it is a spiral and the spiral is one of many within a hydra but there is the desire to tell stories. Or to hear them, in this case. Dear Miss Burgess, we regret to inform you that we are interested in the type of history that fits a storybook. Fits a dissertation. Looking to the margins to find stories, newness, interest. The more important she can make an obscure historical person seem, the better. They have to have a story. Misty didnât just live a life and die and rot. Entropy and reduction to basic compounds. Children carry genes, people she interacted with carrying on, compounds feeding worms. No. Her story ended. She was a woman of colour and she killed men. Or she saw them killed. Or. There needs to be more arc to it. Becky needs to learn arc. She knows spiral can be traced she knows the math but this is not a story. Assuming zero value to begin we go one and then one again and thereafter marry the last two. Simple summation gives us the curve. Not arc, not even individual spirals but really a mad arrangement of spirals interacting and branching; genesis and termination everywhere. To look at any one section any individual turning and call it arc is to look upon the many-headed hydra and fear one fang only. But she is tasked. What is the arc within the hydra? It is lying. The part she breaks off and shows them. A new line she draws on the graph without any actual values. Simply an attractive shape. Yes. And sell that. Stare at anything long enough and you will see patterns in it. She will simply help the eye along. She will provide the first two values and suggest their sum.
Ravager Misty had something of a knack for staying one step ahead of authorities. Whenever possible, she seemed to keep her operations as legal as she could. She and her cousins were among the first to begin shipping booze across the Detroit River in what are now known infamously as âCuba Runs.â When the rest of the United States looked to follow in Michiganâs footsteps by threatening to go dry under the Volstead Act, both Berkler brothers applied for boating licences. Handwriting samples from the Berkler accounts books and several of their delivery bills have survived to the present day; while it is difficult to be certain if it was Misty who applied and wrote tests in her cousinsâ names, both licences were applied for in the same hand, and a hand that matches neither of the Berklersâ crude writing styles. By the time America went dry, the Berklers had embarked upon the legal exportation of spirits to Cuba. The fact that the same Berkler boats made the run from Windsor to âCubaâ sometimes four or five times in a single day seemed to elude authorities, who could only check for boat licences, export permits, and approved destinations.
