FORWARD BENDS

Benefits and how they work: These poses compress the abdominal organs, and thereby reduce impulses to eat, and also provide muscular balance, since the backbends stretch the abdomen by contracting the dorsal region, and these do the reverse. If you have spinal stenosis, these poses may help.

Contraindications: Herniated lumbar discs, hamstring tear, retrolisthesis.

Janu Sirsasana

Head-to-knee pose

Benefits and how it works: First, the name is misleading, since you should not literally bring your head to your knees. Rather, the head comes forward with a straight back. This tends to elongate the dorsal, or posterior, part of the digestive tract. The part of the stomach in the back, the fundus down to the pyloric antrum, is rich in the nerve fibers that transmit signals to the brain.

Contraindications: Herniated disc, hamstring tear, osteoporosis, coccygodynia, ischial bursitis.

Helpful hint: If you have difficulty bending from your hips, sit on one or two folded blankets.
