They had just returned from the bank when Avery finally heard from Wilder. He answered the phone but left the room, leaving Brynn in the living room alone.

“I was getting worried, man. What’s going on?” he asked the moment he shut the door to the guest bedroom behind him.

“As soon as I started looking into the cold case files from the Carrington house fire, things started getting weird. It’s like I’m being watched.” Wilder spoke quietly. “I had to wait until I was off shift to get in touch with you.”

“What do you mean, you were being watched?” Avery couldn’t understand why anyone would care if he dug into cold case files unless someone there had something to hide.

“I don’t know, exactly. I’m sure your suspicions are the same as mine. I hope we aren’t dealing with a dirty cop on top of all the other problems with this case, but it looks that way. I found the file, but the folder is missing some things. I can tell because of the creases in the folder. It was much thicker at one time, but now the folder doesn’t seem to close in the same place. It’s like someone’s taken some of the evidence.” Wilder was still speaking in low tones.

“Someone took evidence from the file? You’re sure?” Avery couldn’t believe it. Why would anyone steal evidence from a twentysomething-year-old case file? Unless they were hiding something.

“I’m positive. When I went to the partner of the investigating officer who originally handled the case, he acted strangely. He finally confirmed it. That’s when I started to think I was being watched.” Wilder paused. “As soon as I left the officer’s cubicle, the prickling started. So I acted like I abandoned the whole thing, took the file back to Records, and went back to the other case I’d been working on. But I have been watched ever since.”

“You’re sure?” Avery asked.

“Cop’s instincts, you know?” Wilder said.

“We learned that Brynn’s birth parents lived in a house near here before they built the one that burned,” Avery told Wilder. “I doubt it’ll help, but we plan to go see the house.”

Wilder sucked in a breath. “Actually, it might help more than you think.”

Avery didn’t respond right away. Wilder’s reaction didn’t make sense. Then he asked, “Why? What do you mean?”

“When I looked at the file, it gave an address—1521 Cherry Blossom Street. But there was mention that the house was searched for evidence related to the reasons for the fire. Nothing was found. But maybe they missed something. Maybe, if someone is trying to cover up a crime, they didn’t look as thoroughly as they should’ve,” Wilder said.

“You think the search was botched?”

“Maybe not botched, but maybe they had another reason for going through the house.” Wilder sounded thoughtful.

“It’s worth a try. We will give the house a good search. I don’t know how well it’ll work if the real estate agent is too attentive, but maybe she’ll give us some space.” Avery pondered the scenario.
