They had just returned from the bank when Avery finally heard from Wilder. He answered the phone but left the room, leaving Brynn in the living room alone.
âI was getting worried, man. Whatâs going on?â he asked the moment he shut the door to the guest bedroom behind him.
âAs soon as I started looking into the cold case files from the Carrington house fire, things started getting weird. Itâs like Iâm being watched.â Wilder spoke quietly. âI had to wait until I was off shift to get in touch with you.â
âWhat do you mean, you were being watched?â Avery couldnât understand why anyone would care if he dug into cold case files unless someone there had something to hide.
âI donât know, exactly. Iâm sure your suspicions are the same as mine. I hope we arenât dealing with a dirty cop on top of all the other problems with this case, but it looks that way. I found the file, but the folder is missing some things. I can tell because of the creases in the folder. It was much thicker at one time, but now the folder doesnât seem to close in the same place. Itâs like someoneâs taken some of the evidence.â Wilder was still speaking in low tones.
âSomeone took evidence from the file? Youâre sure?â Avery couldnât believe it. Why would anyone steal evidence from a twentysomething-year-old case file? Unless they were hiding something.
âIâm positive. When I went to the partner of the investigating officer who originally handled the case, he acted strangely. He finally confirmed it. Thatâs when I started to think I was being watched.â Wilder paused. âAs soon as I left the officerâs cubicle, the prickling started. So I acted like I abandoned the whole thing, took the file back to Records, and went back to the other case Iâd been working on. But I have been watched ever since.â
âYouâre sure?â Avery asked.
âCopâs instincts, you know?â Wilder said.
âWe learned that Brynnâs birth parents lived in a house near here before they built the one that burned,â Avery told Wilder. âI doubt itâll help, but we plan to go see the house.â
Wilder sucked in a breath. âActually, it might help more than you think.â
Avery didnât respond right away. Wilderâs reaction didnât make sense. Then he asked, âWhy? What do you mean?â
âWhen I looked at the file, it gave an addressâ1521 Cherry Blossom Street. But there was mention that the house was searched for evidence related to the reasons for the fire. Nothing was found. But maybe they missed something. Maybe, if someone is trying to cover up a crime, they didnât look as thoroughly as they shouldâve,â Wilder said.
âYou think the search was botched?â
âMaybe not botched, but maybe they had another reason for going through the house.â Wilder sounded thoughtful.
âItâs worth a try. We will give the house a good search. I donât know how well itâll work if the real estate agent is too attentive, but maybe sheâll give us some space.â Avery pondered the scenario.
