Chapter 31
âBear with.â Juniperâs inner snob surfaced as she answered a quick text message. She kept one finger extended, silencing the table, as she typed with her other hand. Her audience was far from impressed by Juniperâs antisocial demeanor. They cast snickering looks at each other while awaiting the rest of the story.
Ivy took the opportunity, now that cell reception was back for the moment, to look at her phone. She hoped to find that a new text from Lydia had come through. She frowned when there werenât any.
With a flourish, Juniper hit send for the last time and set down her cell. âNow.â She clapped her hands together and squared her shoulders. âWhere was I?â
Juniper scanned the table of waiting faces and fixed her gaze back on T.C., who shriveled under her very determined attention. Kat interrupted Juniperâs wayward attempts at flirting. âWe were discussing Serene and her visit to Honey Pot.â
âOh, yes.â Juniper frowned. âHer.â
âYes, her,â Trevor said, leaning into Juniperâs line of sight.
She blinked, recoiled, and stumbled back to the topic at hand. âSerene was interviewing townies for her work in progress. Something about a scandal in the surrounding areas.â
âAny particular scandal?â Ivy asked. Even she was growing annoyed with Juniperâs flightiness.
âYes,â Juniper said. âI brought my notes with me.â
âYour notes? Not Sereneâs?â Kat asked.
Juniper chuckled. âTheyâre the same thing. I go with her to interviews or transcribe her dictations. My notes are Sereneâs notes. Theyâre practically her entire book.â
Juniper twisted in her chair to retrieve a small tablet from her backpack. She flipped it open without another word.
âThe entire book? Are you suggesting you ghostwrite for Serene?â Kat asked.
âNot exactly. At least, Iâm not paid as well as a ghostwriter. But yes, I write a great deal of Sereneâs work. I guess she would tell you I edit and improve it. She called it creative revisions and refinements,â Juniper said.
âWhat would you call them?â Ivy prodded.
Juniper sat up straighter in her seat. âStealing the brilliance of an unsuspecting hopeful? Actually, it wasnât as bad as that. Though at times, it felt like it. And sometimes worse.â
Kat gave T.C. a knowing glance. Their suspect radar was firing at the same time. For an assistant to a True Crime novelist, Juniper was handing out evidence against herself faster than Kat could add it up.
