We arrived at the sub-base to find it teeming, several thousand soldiers having arrived now through the tunnel, and more still on the way. They spread out, across the small base, and out toward the open lands beyond, guided there by their commanders, carrying large quantities of supplies and equipment with them as they went.
"Looks like the New Haven soldiers are arriving too now," noted Blair, pointing out the City Guards marching along in their groups, and gathering outside the base. "What do you want to do? Shall we head for the tunnel exit, see if Becs is here yet?"
"Sure, makes sense."
We continued on, pushing through the crowds, moving in the other direction of the soldiers as they marched for the base's exit. Ahead, the coastal wall rose up, a great black barrier to the world outside, looming over the base. Toward the front, I could make out the source of the throng, hundreds of bodies still appearing from a station building, which gave access to the tunnel inside.
"I guess the freight trains are running, then," Blair called over the noise. "They must be huge to be able to accommodate this many soldiers."
"Maybe some are coming through on foot?" I suggested. "Seems too many to fit on the trains."
Blair shrugged, seeing no point in guessing at it, as we spotted Marcus helping to manage things. "Hey, Marc," she called, drawing his attention.
The Captain spun, smiled, and moved toward us. "Ladies," he said. "Something I can help you with?"
"Yeah, where are the others?" asked Blair. "Are they in the station?"
"Depends who you mean by the others, Blair."
"Well, I guess Becs will be with Secretary Burns, right?" Blair said, looking at me.
I nodded. "Probably."
"So, he's here?" Blair looked back at Marcus. "Burns?"
"I believe so," Marcus said. "He was there when I led the Empress here. But, as you can see, I have plenty of work to do. So..."
"We get it, Cap," said Blair. "Don't worry, we'll get out of that luscious hair of yours."
He grinned at her. "You noticed."
"How could I possibly miss it? I think you've got the best curls in Neorome." She winked at him. "You know, after your brother."
He grunted and shook his head. And with that, he marched away.
I looked at her with raised eyes. She shrugged. "I've taken on the role of making light of Marcus's animosity toward his brother," she explained. "Been teasing him about it over the last few days. Thought someone needed to pick up the slack, since you weren't around."
"That wasn't exactly my strategy, Blair," I said.
"Strategy shmategy," she said. "I'm trying my own thing. All this petty family drama bores me. Time to forgive and forget. Let bygones be bygones. You know, all that stuff."
"Water under the bridge?" I suggested.
"Exactly. All those idioms. Idioms for an idiot." She grinned, seeming pleased with herself. "Anyway, I think we're in the way. Let's move."
She drew me on, squeezing through gaps in some of the groups, trying to avoid the lumbering Brutes who plodded in our direction.
