Get Your Bleepin’ Bleepers Under Control

Part of getting primed for the interview process is making sure that you’re reachable. In this brave new gadget-centric world, hiring managers can get a hold of you just about any place at any time. Depending on your total geek-itude, a hiring manager might email you, reach you through your Palm or BlackBerry, leave a message on your home voice mail, call your cell, or even page you. The ways and means of communication are endless, which can also prove dangerous to your job hunt if you haven’t idiot-proofed the process. Loose lips sink ships. So do uninformed roommates, parents, or kids who pick up the phone when they haven’t been briefed about an impending phone call from your future boss. This is exactly why you need to control every point of contact that a hiring manager has with you.

HOME PHONES : When you’re not home and a hiring manager or recruiter calls, one of two things can happen. The phone can ring through to your answering machine, or someone can pick it up (if you don’t live by yourself). The safest thing is not to use your home phone at all and to direct people related to hiring to call you on your cell. If that isn’t an option, the next best thing is to hope that your answering machine picks up before a family member does.
