Mara pulled out an extra blanket and pillow and set them on her chair, a large bowl chair with a wicker frame and pillowed cushion for a seat. It wasnât an ideal alternative to a bed, but sheâd slept on worse. It was only for a night, and she never slept for long. Sometimes she avoided it entirely. If she wasnât tired, she didnât sleep. Such habits led her to take up a lot of hobbies over the years. It felt good to devote herself to a project every now and again, to actually finish something. She picked up various craft skills, made furniture and became an expert at several games. There wasnât a book at the library she hadnât read at least twice, and she once walked almost every inch of the state in a single outing before returning home. Even starting her store was motivated as much by boredom as the obvious financial benefits. She had been everywhere and done everything. She was anxious for something new.
Mara picked up her laptop and sat in her bowl chair, curling her legs up underneath her. It didnât take her long to get it running and online. Her computer was top of the line, excellent memory capacity with hyper threading. She didnât buy new things often, but when she did buy something big or expensive, she always did her research and bought the very best. She clicked past the news with only a cursory glance. She didnât care what was going on around the world. Names and places might change, but ultimately the news never did. It was different people doing the same things over and over again. Every now and again, something would grab her attention, but that was becoming increasingly rare.
She checked her e-mail icon, but it didnât indicate anything new. She wasnât that surprised. She didnât usually get e-mails. None of her acquaintances knew anything about her extensive technological literacy. Most never imagined she knew the first thing about computers. Everyone assumed she avoided them, an ancient relic afraid of technology and the changes it brought. Despite all that, over the span of the past year, she started getting messages from someone she didnât know, and though she could easily track down most people online, she could not discern his identity. The messages were short and a little cryptic at first. There was an almost playful, bored quality to them that intrigued her and reminded her of herself. Eventually the mystery sender started sending more detailed emails discussing philosophy and literature. Some of the texts referenced were very old, and he displayed a unique take on each of them. Not being one to socialize easily, she found the discussions an interesting change of pace.
But there was no e-mail tonight. Sighing, Mara logged in to the current game she was playing and started to sort through her missions. There were a couple of unfinished missions and one contact to meet before she could unlock the next stage.
