Tabitha steered the boat down the middle of the river. A loose strand of hair whipped across her face. Tears stuck a wayward piece to her cheek. She hooked it with a finger and tucked it behind her ear. Her arm chose that moment to remind her of the bullet that went straight through Dougâs arm and sliced across hers. The gash burned, and blood soaked her sleeve. At least the bleeding had appeared to stop. Unlike her brain that continued to process Dougâs words.
Her stomach flopped. Pregnant? The little confidence Beth had mustered since Doug rescued her disintegrated. The man had admitted to a fear of failure with his wife and son. Would he continue to help Tabitha if he knew about her unborn baby? Could he risk his fear of failure and be responsible for another woman and unborn baby? A shiver raced up her spine, even with the rising temperatures and sun shining overhead. And what about her growing feelings for him?
âBeth?â
âYeah?â She refused to look at him. The man was as perceptive as they came.
âI asked what was wrong.â
âNothing. You just caught me by surprise.â Her hand brushed over her belly. She would face any evil head-on for the tiny life inside.
âI know I failed in a big way back then, but I promise Iâll do my best to protect you.â
She went against her vow not to look him in the eye and glanced in his direction. âI know you will.â And that was the problem. Heâd help her until he found out about the baby. Then heâd realize that protecting her wasnât worth the emotional anguish of protecting another unborn baby.
He pulled his cell phone from his back pocket and winced. His face paled, and his breathing came in pants.
The pained response stabbed her in the heart. The man had already sacrificed so much for her. She slowed the boat and shifted her gaze to him. âTry not to move.â
He swallowed, and his Adamâs apple bobbed. âWaiting for cell service to call for help.â
âThatâs a good idea since I have no idea where Iâm going.â Sheâd said more than a few prayers for Doug to stay conscious and guide her to safety.
âYouâre doing great. Iâm sorry Iâm not any help. But if I move, Iâll puke.â
âPlease do not move then.â She didnât do well with vomit, especially now. She cringed even thinking about it.
Doug palmed his phone and rested his head against the side of the boat. âNo service yet.â
âDo you think the shooter followed us?â Tabitha scanned the woods on either side of the river.
âI donât see how. We took the only boat. My guess is he went back to the cabin.â
The rustle of leaves and birds singing in trees filled the silence that lingered between them.
Tabitha kept the boat pointed down the middle of the river. She glanced at the man whoâd promised to protect her. His closed eyes and taut mouth worried her. âDoug, are you awake?â
âYeah.â He blinked and focused on her.
