He hadn’t made any progress in finding her. Bitch! She had his money and his kid. He’d had to go to his mother for a loan to get his creditors paid. All the time he’d taken off work to deal with this, along with the money she’d cleared out of his account, had left him short of funds. He’d finally figured out how she’d been able to get several thousand out of his account without him knowing. She’d worked out that he used his usual password of his mother’s maiden name for his online banking and Drew’s birthday as the PIN. Yes, he knew he was supposed to change them and not use the same for everything, but who on earth had time to do that? She’d shifted funds out of his business account into the joint one he had her named on. They only used it for the shopping and day-to-day expenses, so there was never much in it, but because there were regular transfers in, it hadn’t pinged his phone as an unusual transaction. She’d then been into the branch to withdraw the money, and of course, as she was on the account, it had let her. She’d acted quickly too—done the transfer and the withdrawal all the day before she went. She must have been planning it for a while, probably checked that she could get into the account online first, then plotted her escape.

He’d not been chasing up the customers who owed him, his eye off the ball while he sorted all this out, and now he was the one left struggling. But he was back in business now and he was going to work every hour of the day and fight back on this. He wasn’t going to take this.

She’d be dragged back by the courts with her tail between her legs. He was going for full custody. She wasn’t fit to look after a child on her own. He’d get custody and she’d have to come crawling back to him because she wouldn’t have any other way of seeing her child if she didn’t.

Time she learned she couldn’t mess around with a man like him after he’d given her everything. She’d be nowhere without him. Probably half dead in some drug den, pimped out to get a fix. That’s where she’d been headed when he met her. And look what he’d given her! A proper family life, a good home, a child, and a husband who brought the money home and never cheated on her.

And that hadn’t been enough for her.

His mother was furious when he told her.

“I told you she was trash! Don’t you let her get away with this, Danny!”

“Oh, she won’t, Mum. Just as soon as I’m on my feet again, I’ll deal with her, don’t you worry.”

“Can’t you let her go and find a better woman? You’d have your pick. Why does it have to be her? Let her go, Danny, and find someone worthy of you. A girl from a proper background who knows how to behave.
