As she tidied up the kitchen from breakfast, her phone went off with Sage’s ring tone.

“Hi Sage. Sorry I missed you this morning.”

“Mom! People are talking about you and some guy having a huge argument in front of Frosty’s last night. It’s all over town. Who’d you have the fight with?”

“A guy I knew back in Spain.” Samara’s shoulders slumped lower. She should have told Sage about dating Pierce, but the moment never seemed right. And now she was the topic of the local gossips. Great. “We’d dated, and he even asked me to marry him—”

“MARRY HIM? And you didn’t think to mention that fact to me? What the hell, Mom? Who is this guy?”

“We met about a month after you left to come here. We hit it off, and he was pretty charming back in Spain. Just before I left Spain, he popped the question.”

“WHAT?”

“Take it easy. I put him off. I thought he was a nice guy, but I just didn’t think that he was…”

“The ONE, right?”

“Yeah, pretty much. At any rate, when he proposed, I put him off and came home. Then yesterday, without warning, he showed up here! It became clear to me pretty quickly that we’re not a good match.” To say the least.

“So, you broke up with him? In the middle of the street?”

“There’s more to it than that. Pierce is a Shivani.”

“A what?”

“A Shivani. Pierce is a Romanian Gypsy witch. I didn’t realize it back in Spain because he put a spell on me to keep me from seeing his magical nature.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

“It’s not! I had no idea he had been doing that back in Spain. But when he showed up yesterday unannounced, I finally saw his aura and his magical nature. He’s up to something, just what, I don’t know. Nana-Poo caught on right away. She says that Shivani can be dangerous.”

“Dangerous?”

“Yeah. They practice Black Magic.”

“Uh-oh…”

“Yeah. He kept trying to exert control over me, but it didn’t work; I think it’s because of the Stream and Cove—I’m stronger here in Harmony Grove.” She paused for a second. “When I saw him for what he was, and how he tried again and again to exert his will over me… well, that’s when I broke it off with him. He didn’t want to hear it, so we had the fight in town.”

Max clawed the leg of her jeans. ‘I don’t trust that Gypsy around my daughter. What if he—’

A spike of fear shot through Sam. Max was right. Pierce was desperate and desperate guys were dangerous. “Are you alone right now, Sage?”

“Yeah, I’m taking a break outside, sitting by myself on the picnic table. Why?”

“Pierce used his powers of persuasion and glamour on me in Spain. I only saw that last night. What I’m trying to say is if he shows up at your shop, stay clear of him. When are you finished there?”

“Holy Shit! Boy, can you pick them, Mom! First my father doesn’t bother to marry you and then you hook up with some black magic gypsy guy?”

Her cheeks warmed hearing her daughter’s scorn.
