Rezzek’s outrage was palpable. ‘It’s out of date!’

‘Check the time stamp,’ Lydia smirked. ‘It was compiled today at my request.’

Rezzek’s chair scraped back as he yelled, ‘That image is fake! I checked, double-checked and triple-checked my figures!’

Lydia smiled. ‘This is a totally accurate rendition of the true data.’

Rezzek pointed a finger at her. ‘When that solar bulge discharges in Earth’s direction, no one will survive to hear me say I told you so.’ With that he flung his earpiece and microphone on the table and stalked out.

Lydia turned to John with a shrug. ‘I can’t help notice his timing conveniently precedes the next round of research funding applications.’

The presenter smiled nervously. ‘So, in summary, Professor de Carey, more solar flares are expected but it’s not unusual and there’s no need for viewers to panic?’

‘No need to panic at all.’

As adverts blared, Cris muted the sound. ‘Hung, drawn and quartered. I wouldn’t fancy tackling your mum.’

Saxon shivered. ‘Negotiating pocket money was a challenge.’

Pink yawned and stretched. ‘Talking of bed, I’m going up.’

Cris caught her yawn as he flicked open Axel’s monitor. ‘Nest is a comfortable twenty-three degrees, humidity ninety-eight per cent and… oh crap!’

‘What?’ Pink paused with the kettle in her hand.

‘Saxon, you bloody idiot! Why’d you give her that sediment?’ Cris dropped the monitor on the table and rushed towards the back door. ‘You’ve only gone and killed her!’

The kettle banged down as Pink followed close on his heels and Saxon spun the monitor to face him. The gasar ring lay on a bed of curling leaves with six crumpled legs protruding through and sticking up at odd angles.

He tried to empathise with Cris’s sense of loss, but all he could feel was relief that at last he could retrieve the ring that Tehuti insisted he take to Amenta.
