Ashleyâs housekeeper, Julia, led the detectives to the sitting room, claiming that Ashley would be with them momentarily. She offered to retrieve something for them to drink, but they thanked her and declined.
Dixon took the time to study the photos Ashley had on her mantle over the fireplace. She noted that, so far, she hadnât seen a picture of Josie. Of course, it wasnât always the case, she decided; however, Dixon assumed as close and as inseparable as Ashley was to Josie, it appeared odd that Josie didnât seem to exist in the house. She picked up a photo of Ashley and studied the young girl in her pigtails.
âThank you for waiting, Detectives.â
Dixon turned to see Ashley enter the room wearing a tennis skirt and white blouse.
âI had to finish changing. Iâm meeting some friends in a little bit for a tennis match. Iâm afraid I havenât got much time.â
âTennis sounds fun,â Dixon said. âThank you for allowing us to speak with you again, Miss Griffin. Weâll try not to keep you.â
âOf course, Detective. Anything to help. How is your investigation coming along?â
âNot bad. Weâve managed to learn a lot.â Dixon returned the photo and linked her fingers together in front of her. âIncluding the identity of Josieâs mystery man.â
Ashley arched an eyebrow with curiosity. âDid you, now? Who was it?â
âHmmâ¦â Dixon muttered, shaking her head slowly. âBefore we get to that, I have a question for you.â
Ashley stretched her lips into a smile. âAsk away.â
Dixon motioned with a tilt of her head at the photos on the mantle. âIâve had enough time to see a good majority of the photos you have out. There are some of you dancing as a young lady, a few with you as a child, and some as an adult. Youâve also taken photos with a lot of people in your life. But I havenât yet seen one of Josie. Not even in the background.â
âAnd youâre wondering why?â
âYes.â Dixon crossed the room to stand in front of Ashley. âWasnât she your best friend?â
Ashley released a heavy breath. âItâs too much for me to handle. I had pictures of Josie for a while after her death, but to be honest, it really hurt me that sheâs no longer here. Itâs not because I donât love her that I donât have any of her pictures up. Itâs because I do.â
Dixon noticed Montgomeryâs questioning eyes, so she decided to drop the subject of the photos.
âHow would you go about describing your dance instructorâDerek Schultz?â she asked.
âMr. Schultz? Heâs a nice guy,â Ashley said. âI really enjoyed his lessons. Heâs very good at what he does.â
âDo you remember if he treated Josie any differently than you or his other students?â
âI donât think so. Why?â As she spoke, her eyes widened. âOh, goodness. Are you thinking Mr. Schultz and Josie wereâ¦involved?â
âWe have his admission that they were,â Montgomery interjected.
âReally?â Ashley sounded genuinely surprised. âI had no idea. No wonder Josie never told me. It all makes sense now.â
âWhy is that?â Dixon pressed.
