“You did what?”

August clenched his eyes shut and rubbed his forehead. “You heard me.”

When August opened his eyes, he saw Tripp leaning over splayed legs, staring at him intently. The massive fireplace beside him rose two stories until it met up with the cathedral ceiling of Tripp and Josie’s home.

“Oh, man. This was your answer to keeping Amie in Camden, I take it?”

“What was the answer to keeping Amie in Camden?” Josie stepped into the room and sat beside Tripp, leaning back and closing her eyes. “They are both asleep. Finally.”

Tripp squeezed Josie’s knee. “You should head on upstairs and get some sleep. I’ll take first shift.”

Though Josie looked ready to fall asleep on the spot, she shook her head, opened one eye. “First, I want to know what’s the answer to keeping Amie in Camden?”

August stuck his tongue inside his cheek. He’d already humiliated himself. What did it matter if he told Amie’s sister? She’d find out sooner or later.

“That wasn’t why I did it. I thought . . . I thought it was the right thing. I proposed to Amie tonight.”

Josie shot up, fully awake. “What? I didn’t know you two were even back together. That girl . . . I know I’ve been busy lately, but I’d appreciate it if someone in this family would keep me in the loop.” She shot a glare at Tripp.

“We’re not back together.” August raked a hand through his hair.

Josie cocked her head. “You’re not back together, but you . . . asked her to marry you?”

He blew out a long breath. The more it sank in, the more he realized how ridiculous it all was. “I had a pretty crazy experience last night. I felt like God was speaking to me. Forgiving me. Asking me to start new.”

Tripp blinked. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”

August shrugged. “Yeah, I guess I am. I gave my life to God.”

Tripp stood. Slapped him on the back and enveloped him in a bear hug. “August, that’s great. I couldn’t imagine better news.”

Josie hugged him next, but once she pulled back, she shook her head. “But what does this have to do with asking Amie to marry you?”

In as few words as possible, he outlined his encounter in Grandpop’s chair the night before, as well as the random events that had prompted him to ask Amie to be his wife.

Tripp and Josie listened carefully. When August finished, Tripp’s mouth tightened. “I’m sorry, August. I can understand why you might have been thinking God wanted that for you, but who’s to say He meant for you to ask Amie the next day?”

“I know, I know. I jumped the gun. Obviously.”

“Did you pray about it?” Josie asked.

August shook his head. “I thought it was clear, you know?”

Tripp sighed. “I suppose it’s not outside God’s power for Him to speak to you that way, but you know . . . the Bible isn’t a magic roulette wheel. It’s meant to be read in context, prayed over, studied.
