Making the Most of Exercising Indoors

I recommend that you walk outdoors whenever possible, but there will be times when it is not practical. In the wintertime, for example, it may be dark when you go to work and dark when you come home, making it very difficult to walk outside during daylight hours. Or there may be times when it’s too hot, wet, windy, slippery, or cold for it to be wise to go outdoors.

How can you increase your light exposure if you exercise indoors? If you exercise at a gym, choose equipment that is located close to a window and face outdoors. Or look for equipment that is located directly under a bank of lights and look at the lights from time to time as you exercise. If you exercise at home, face a window, exercise in the brightest room, or bring extra lights into your workout space. Some people purchase special light boxes that are mounted on stands and place them near their indoor treadmill, stairclimber, or other exercise equipment.

Breaking Out of the Routine

“BEFORE, I NEVER THOUGHT anything of getting up and going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Now I go to the window and I look up at the sky, and I try to get the light in my eyes.”
