Chapter 13

Nate was right. The bikers raced off in different directions. One of the bikes behind her made a U-turn in the road and sped off in the direction they had come from. In her review mirror, she saw that the curly-haired man had reappeared on the road and done the same thing. She knew they would split up again, and that Nate would be forced to choose which one to pursue.

Schimanski would face the same issue. The motorcycle in front of her revved its engine and left a trail of smoke in its wake. The one behind her risked gravity and severe road rash as it slid onto its side, managed to come back upright, and made a sharp right turn onto a dirt road. She saw the flash of metal and a trail of blazing dust in her mirror.

She blocked the crazy stunts from her mind and did as Nate told her. Ignoring everything around her, she went straight home and pulled into the safety of their gated entry. There was no denying her nerves were frazzled.

It was a moment before she felt steady enough to walk.

Madison put a smile on her face, but Brash saw through it as soon as she walked through the door.

“Sweetheart? What’s wrong?” he asked in alarm.

“Rough morning.” She avoided direct eye contact with him by addressing her stepdaughter. “What have you two been up to? Have you had lunch?”

“I was going to cook while the physical therapist was here,” Megan defended herself, “but I looked in the fridge, and there’s a ton of leftovers in there!”

Madison managed a smile. “Thanks to your grandma Lydia. She’s been like a kitchen fairy, whipping up meals with her magic spoon.”

“Madison.” Brash’s voice was firm. “You’re avoiding my question. What’s wrong?”

Megan sensed the tension between them. “Do I need to leave?” she offered, half-rising from her seat beside the bed.

With a weary sigh, Madison shook her head. “No. This involves you, too.”

“Here, have a seat.” Megan offered a chair to her stepmother. The moment she was settled, the young woman said, “Now spill.”

Omitting the first of the story, Madison started in the middle. “I drove out to The Grove to get a salad for lunch. While I was there, I, uh, I saw two of the men on the motorcycles.”

“Motorcycles? As in… the motorcycle gang?” Given her previous encounter with them, Megan’s voice was understandably high.

“I’m afraid so. I waited until they were gone before starting back to town, but a little way out, they reappeared.” She glanced at Brash. His face was set like stone. “When a third man joined them, I realized I was in trouble, so I called Nate. He told me to get out of there as fast as I could, so that’s exactly what I did. He and Schimanski are handling the men. There’s a very good chance Nate will stop by later to take my statement.”

“Where is he now? Is he okay?” Megan wanted to know.

“The last I knew, he was in pursuit.
