Chapter Nineteen

“Remind me again why I’m the one doing this when you have a perfectly good husband”—I level a hard stare on Rose—“who literally works in construction?”

She smiles, an apparition of a dimple appearing in her cheek, here one minute and gone the next. “Mitchell doesn’t like to do any home improvement projects after working on other people’s houses all day. Our floors have been half refinished for the past six months. I keep telling him he better get it done before the baby arrives.”

An absent-minded hand travels over her belly. She’s wearing a thin cotton T-shirt that looks like it came straight out of Mitch’s closet, and even it strains to cover her stomach. A half-moon sliver of skin peeks out below the hem no matter how many times she tries to tug it down.

“Considering you’re due in a month, I’d say the odds aren’t in your favor.”

She finishes taking a sip of her Dr. Pepper—pregnancy craving of late—before grimacing. “I’d say you’re probably right.”

I hum a response, turning to observe the chaos I’ve scattered over the carpet of her soon-to-be nursery. Since this baby is a boy, name still undetermined, she’s decided to completely redo their spare bedroom rather than have the baby share Cleo’s Pepto Bismol–pink space across the hall. The walls here are already a pale blue color, so the biggest project at hand is hanging the peel-and-stick wallpaper strewn across the floor in different stages of unpackaging.

Looking at the print of zoo animals in varying shades of beige, all I see is an adorable pain in the ass.

“And do you intend to help me with this?” I ask, cocking an eyebrow at her.

The incredulous expression on her face answers me long before her mouth does. “I’ll be taking on a more supervisory role.”

“Of course you will be.” I expected nothing less. I’d blame it on the pregnancy, but Rose is best at dreaming up ideas while someone else executes. At least until it comes to her pastries. I take a bite of one of the almond croissants she prepared as payment, and it is executed perfectly. “How will I know if what I’m hanging is even? I can’t hold up both sides of the sheet and a level.”

She waves a hand dismissively. “I’ll just eyeball it from here and tell you when it’s good!”

I chew on the inside of my cheek, considering my options. “I think I’m going to call Eden. The bar shouldn’t be too busy this early. Maddie will be okay by herself for a few hours.”

“If you think that’s best!” Rose shrugs. “Tell her there are pastries; that usually works with her.”

A giggle rattles my chest. She’s not wrong. I search for my phone, finally uncovering it beneath the first sheet of wallpaper I unrolled to examine how the backing works. I’ve already dialed and brought the phone halfway to my ear when I pause. “Is there anything else we might need before I call her?”

“No, I think that’s about it.” She takes another long pull from her straw, and I hear the telltale gurgling of a drink running dry.
