âHEâS IN V-FIB.â BLUE stared unblinking at Enzo. He frowned, looking confused, so she said it again. âHeâs in V-fib. I donâtââ She fell quiet as Dr. Jackson came around the corner and sprinted past them, going through the same door the crash cart had disappeared through. She started after him and then stopped, looking down at her gloved hands. Sheâd jumped into CPR as they rolled him in, replacing the paramedic, and then Char had pulled her away. She stared at her hands, still seeing their purple outline on her fatherâs unmoving chest.
She became aware of Enzoâs hand on her elbow, gently moving her to one side in the hallway. âBlue, maybe thereâs somewhere we could wait?â
She kept an arm around Murphy and led them into a small room across the hall. She shut the door and took Hook from Enzo, setting him on the floor. The cat darted underneath the green vinyl couch Blue perched on. Five minutes ago, sheâd been sitting at the nursesâ station with her supervisor Char, sipping coffee. Next shift was coming on and things had been slow except for the incoming Coast Guard patient. She looked up at Enzo. âThey wonât let me in there.â
He took a seat and leaned toward her, elbows on knees. âThatâs okay. You trust them, right? Iâm sure theyâre doing everything they can.â
She scowled at him. âDonât. I hate that. Thatâs what we always say. It doesnâtââ She cut herself off, feeling Murphy watching her.
âIs he gonna die?â he demanded. âHe was fine! He was fishing and he got a big one and he was laughing at my joke! He was okay. I donât get it!â
âMurph.â She tried to pull him closer but he jerked away. Blue folded her hands in her lap. âTheyâll help him, Murph. They will. Thatâs my team. Theyâre good. Theyâll save him.â Oh God, what if she was lying? Sheâd seen the EKG readout, his blue lips, his purple nailbeds. Sheâd heard the paramedics. Her dad had failed to respond to everything so farâepi, atropine, amiodarone. Through the window of the family lounge, she saw the cardiothoracic surgeon on call go into her dadâs room. It was killing her not to be in there. Char had told her theyâd come get her as soon as they could.
Murphy slid off the couch to the floor, putting a hand out to the cat. He drew his knees up to his chest, which made him look even smaller than he was.
âWhy are you here?â Blue asked Enzo. It had just occurred to her. How had he even gotten involved in all this? How had Enzo ended up with their son?
He stood. âOh. Iâm sorry. Iâll go.â
âNo,â Blue said, suddenly gripped with panic. Which was at least better than the thick dread pressing down on her. He couldnât leave, she needed him here. âNo, please, Enzo. Donât go. I meant, howâhow did you end up with Murphy? Nobody has told me what happened.â
âSalvi and I were on the water and heard Murphyâs distress call.
