Chapter eight

The day dragged on with every slow tick of the clock. Deep cleaning the apartment helped Nora work away some of the nervous energy that kept her on her feet. The small space did not take long to scrub down, so she soon found herself doing a second cleaning of her kitchen to keep her hands busy.

’…be put to death on site.′

Silas lounged on the couch, watching her with minimal curiosity as she moved about him. When her hands were raw from scrubbing, she looked from cupboard to cupboard, knowing she should eat.

Her mind would not stop repeating the words she had spoken. The not knowing what the night would hold tightened her stomach and she gave up on food, sitting beside her cat with her laptop on her lap. She searched for Mystique nightclub for the hundredth time and just as before, nothing came up. Nightspots for supernatural beings probably did not need to advertise. She now understood why the woman who answered the door, when she had tried to apply for a job, slammed it shut in her face.

The clothes that she had scattered on her bed didn’t produce anything inspiring each time she tried to decide on what to wear. The outfit that she had worn to the interview seemed like the best option. A few bangles and a necklace would dress it up a little. After forcing down some soup and pulling her hair in and out of the bun countless times, she deemed herself ready. It was only just past eight, a little early. If she was to arrive before she was needed to head out with the others, she may have a few minutes with Elijah to make sure she was prepared. Not that he had appeared eager to provide her with any information. Gabriel was more of the type to share and overshare at that. Maybe he would be there this time.

“Wish me luck, Sy,” Nora waved. Silas stretched out with a yawn and turned his back to her in response. “Don’t worry too much, bud.” She shook her head at her worriless cat.

Locking her door, she noticed the smudge of ash on the door. The mark had been smeared by Nora’s finger the night before and now it was a perfect teardrop again. It didn’t sit well that she hadn’t heard anyone in the hallway all day, yet the mark was set in place again. She stared at it hoping that a burst of information would come to her as it had in the office. Nothing but the words that she was trying to smother came to mind.

’…put to death on site.′

Nora took a deep breath, pushing the notion away again. Maybe other than that terrifying thought, it was information only about vampires that had been given to her.

“Working the night shift or heading out for some fun?” Jenny’s voice rang out from her own door, making Nora jump.

“It’s work for me tonight,” Nora said, trying to keep her voice casual.
