It Tastes Good, Don’t it?

Saturday morning at 11:00, I arrive at Desirea’s Sweets. I brought change for the parking metre today, so I’m able to park along the main street in front of the bakery. Tyler dropped Quinn off so the two of us can spend as much time as we want together, and I’ll drive her home later. As much as I’m happy to spend time with Quinn, the lingering knowledge that she shared what happened with my family has me on edge.

Quinn greets me with a python-like hug, then stands back to take in my appearance. I feel naked under her intense gaze, and imagine this is how a carton of eggs must feel before being purchased—is my delicate exterior intact, or have I been ruined?

Once I’ve passed her inspection, she smiles and says, “You look great, Chica. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too, Amiga, but you promised cake.”

Quinn giggles. “I knew you’d be excited about this part. Tyler really couldn’t care about the cake—if it were up to him, we’d probably have some kale and quinoa concoction with protein powder frosting.”

“That sounds horrific.”

“Now you understand why I asked you.” She laughs as she drags me through the door that rings as we enter.

Of course, she only asked you because you’re a fatso with an affinity for cake. It’s not because she wanted to spend time with you.

We walk in and we’re greeted by the bakery’s owner, Desirea. She’s a gorgeous woman who’s about my age, with red hair and a sunny disposition that could blind you if you got too close. It’s hard not to like her immediately.

After proper introductions, she invites us into an office area that has been set up for these types of consultations. There is a small table in the middle with five chairs around it. The walls are covered in pictures of the most amazing confectionery creations. I’m blown away by the art people can create with cake. I struggle to colour in the lines.

On the table, she has four separate types of cake, and the smell alone is making me salivate. She describes them as if they were each creating a Tinder profile. Quinn’s found the love of her life, but I’m up for grabs.

We have a basic sponge with raspberry-lemon filling, salted caramel with dark chocolate ganache, maple pecan with French vanilla frosting, and a cookies and cream cake with crushed Oreos. Swipe right, please.

“How soon can we get married?” I blurt out.

Why are you such an embarrassment to yourself?

“Me or the cake?” Desirea asks.

“Oh, I meant the cake. Sorry, I have an addiction to Oreos.” My face flushes as I adjust myself in my seat.

“So do I, to be honest. That’s why I always offer this cake. I assume everyone loves them as much as I do. You seem nice, so I would have hated to turn you down.” She laughs, holding her hand up to display her engagement ring. “I’m glad you meant the cake. I’m happily taken.”

Everyone your age is taken.
