One week later, the Generosity Exchange was nearly forgotten. Even Chloe rarely brought it up any more, so discouraged was she that her application to go “anywhere but here but especially London” hadn’t been received with an immediate acceptance. The first few days after they had turned in their applications, Melody had heard regular dramatic sighs coming from Chloe’s office, which she had taken as an indicator that her friend had—yet again—checked her email to find no response from the Generosity Exchange acceptance committee.

On the other hand, Melody had been stricter than ever with her email-checking regimen. She allowed herself to check it once first thing in the work day and then again at around four o’clock. The remainder of her day was spent on the many projects that needed her attention, but checking at those two times to see if there was anything else she needed to add to her to-do list served her well. Kept her from wasting time refreshing her inbox that she knew would be better spent making progress on an important task.

And of course, there were many tasks that required her attention—always, in fact. While at one point in time Melody’s responsibilities had been clearly under the umbrella of the marketing department, at times it felt like she was Mr. Richards’s personal assistant.

Not that Melody minded. She loved being involved in so many of the projects that EduPowerment was launching into the world, and she loved to be a needed member of the team. Sure, she did find herself getting increasingly exhausted as the workweek went on…and she barely managed to cook a nourishing meal more than once a week…and she couldn’t remember the last time she read a book for fun. But those were all normal parts of being an adult, she was pretty sure. Things were bound to quiet down at some point, and when that happened she would probably miss all the fun and excitement and sleepless nights of her twenties. Or at least that was what she was telling herself.

“Oh. My. Freaking. Goodness!” Chloe’s voice had increased in volume with every word, her head popping up over the cubicle wall at the end of her exclamation. “Check your email, Mel! Check it now!”

Melody raised an eyebrow at Chloe but kept her fingers flying on the keyboard. She was in the flow of a great idea, and if she stopped mid-sentence, there was a good chance she wouldn’t be able to find the rest of the thought when she came back to it. “What is it?” she asked, when she had reached the end of the paragraph.

Chloe’s eyes were twinkling, her eyebrows practically dancing with excitement. “It’s good news for me. I can tell you that much! But you should really check your own email first, so you can either join in my celebration or I can stop rubbing it in your face and go be happy someplace else.”

Melody shook her head as she broke her own rule, logging back into her email.
