Piney Run Falls

LOCATION: Potomac Wayside Park

ADDRESS/GPS FOR THE FALLS: US-340; 39° 19.208’ N, 77° 42.739’ W

DIRECTIONS: From US-340 West in Sandy Hook, Maryland, travel less than 1 mile as you cross the Potomac River into Virginia. The park will be on your right almost immediately after crossing the bridge. Please note that if you travel east from Harpers Ferry, WV, you’ll need to cross the bridge into Maryland, turn around, and come back; there are no left turns allowed into the park from the eastbound lane.

HEIGHT: 20 feet CREST: Varies

NEAREST TOWN: Sandy Hook, Maryland

HIKE DIFFICULTY: Easy

TRAIL QUALITY: Dirt, with rocks and exposed roots

ROUND-TRIP DISTANCE: Around 75 yards

TRIP REPORT & TIPS:

Like Scott’s Run Falls (above), Piney Run Falls is not far from the Potomac River. It too is in a nice wooded setting, but Piney Run Falls is nestled under a thicker canopy of trees, as opposed to the more open canopy found at Scott’s Run. I was fortunate to visit Piney Run Falls during a couple days of summer rainfall, allowing me to witness this beautiful waterfall with great water flow.

From the parking area right next to US-340, simply follow one of several well-worn paths down to the waterfall.
