TECHNICAL DESIGN FOR CYBERED CONFLICT

The origins and volume of technological design innovations today challenge security strategies of modern nations in ways unseen over most of history. The “information age” is really just beginning, and yet the puzzling threats are rising exponentially. Now web-based attacks are already growing in sophistication to include deception of the humans whose likely responses to being misled are included in the attack, even making the duped user into the attacker’s proxy (Rowe and Custy 2006). Attackers wanting to attack again, or just testing their skills in small attacks, will sometimes make essential systems fail for seemingly inexplicable reasons. Not only must society deal with the rippling physical effects of successful cybered attacks, but that remediation is itself likely to be delayed as experts puzzle their way through the maze. This complexity inside and outside the elements of the World Wide Web is, to some extent, a function of how it was viewed when it was first emerging.
